You could say it started in the entertainment industry with Chris Anderson’s influential Long Tail article in 2004, but it wasn’t long before the concept became mainstream among search marketers. For 1, 2 and 3-word searches, ad ranking is relatively low, and ads are appearing near the bottom of the first page. So take it.

For non-ecommerce websites it can be number of people who completed a task, so for a support site the number of people who got to a faq or a answer or a knowledge base article (this is a really crude measure of success for a support site but it is something). 3 : Don’t measure conversion rate by page or link. You get the idea.

You also map things back to the customer consideration life cycle, achieving better targeting and landing page experience on your site. Google, for 30 or 40 or low cents per click (or even dollars) getting in front of relevant people, those that actually typed in keywords related to your business, people who are looking for you!

Of course this suggests that you should be creating pages that zero in on snagging searchers who use long tail keywords. And, since there are potentially so many different long tail combinations that searchers may use to buy what you offer, that means youll likely be creating more pages.
