End of an Era - Authorware
Just saw an Adobe announcement that they plan to discontinue development of Authorware. Since it was the first multimedia authoring tool I ever used, it certainly is bringing back some memories of some pretty cool work (and headaches). Goodbye Authorware. Thanks for the memories.

Articulate, Captivate, Dreamweaver and Lectora Tops in eLearning Authoring Tool Satisfaction
I was somewhat surprised that my post: Course Authoring and Rapid eLearning Tool Satisfaction didn't generate more interest. You can see the detailed view of the sat numbers here . This data shows that the Articulate tools, Adobe Captivate and Dreamweaver and Lectora are near the top for elearning course authoring. While tools such as Toolbook and Authorware are down a bit. What surprised me is that there wasn't more discussion around this. Is this just common knowledge these days? Do people buy this?

Joseph Ganci was the guy I learned almost everything I know about Authorware from. Admittedly, I'm far from a guru, but it is way cool to meet someone in person who has taught you so much personally. His Authorware site. - Super-duper valuable for those of us who may still be using Authorware.

ThinkingWorlds - Authoring tool for MUVE
Another gem from Donald Clark . I was not aware of ThinkingWorlds until today and now I can't wait to try it out. Thinking Worldsâ„¢ educational game is an easy to use authoring engine that enables gamers and learners to create, edit, play and share their own 3D learning based games, that teach and entertain. Ever since I started developing Interactive 3D simulations, some 10+ years ago, I've wondered how long it would be before someone created the MUVE (multi user virtual environment) equivalent of Authorware or Director . Secondlife is a ...

DevLearn and the Adobe Learning Summit!
DevLearn and the Adobe Learning Summit! This is quite possibly one of the coolest things I've seen in my eLearning career. And that's an industry leading software company focusing a major effort on the eLearning industry and the many elearning developers that have been using their tools to improve the learning process for so many. I was a very early user of Authorware , Director , and of course, FLASH . I can't remember how it happened but I became mostly connected with Director. I truly loved the tool and used it whenever I could. I was involved with the Dir8.5 beta when ...

Straight talk - am I the only one enjoying myself?
Here at the eLearning Guild Annual Gathering in Boston (click the link and see if you can work out what it takes to be a keynote speaker - I'm already bald, I just need the beard), I have to say I really enjoyed the Straight Talk session, part of the impressively-titled Learning Management Colloquium (whatever that means). Anyway, the idea was that Lance Dublin interview a series of e-learning notables in the presence of us punters. I saw three of the interviews: Michael Allen (creator of Authorware and of ADDIE - the instructional design process): he told us that he's no longer ...

Catching Up to Our Imagination
I think that [in the next 3-5 years] the changes will be more in the area of content authoring and development. ...remember how long we had to struggle with Authorware and clunky, inflexible, horrible-to-use proprietary authoring tools, before applications like Captivate and Articulate et al were eventually released? " In my view, in the last decade, technological and network infrastructure deficiencies, not to mention a serious lack of investment, went a long way in impeding our ability to develop engaging and immersive learning; in short, our imagination exceeded our technical ...

Shift in eLearning from Pure Courseware towards Reference Hybrids
Just when you've made the transition from the prior generation of CBT authoring tools (e.g., Authorware , Toolbook ) to the new generation of WBT authoring tools (e.g., Captivate , Lectora ), it looks like things are slowly shifting again. The shift I'm seeing is away from the design of pure "courseware" solutions and much more to "reference hybrid" solutions. To explain this, I need to step back and deal with the fact that terminology around eLearning Patterns is problematic. In my mind, "courseware" is interactive (to some level) instruction run asynchronously. It is created via ...

Creating successful e-learning
I saw Michael Allen speak for the first time at the eLearning Guild's Annual Gathering in Boston. The creator of Authorware and long-time instructional design guru created something of a stir (at least with me) when he announced his dissatisfaction with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model for e-learning development and put his not inconsiderable weight behind a new process of 'successive approximation'. It's a while (some ten years in fact) since I had to manage any really major e-learning development projects that involved a client and a team ...
