What did I learn about learning in 2008?
    Wednesday, December 3, 2008
The Learning Circuit’s Blog Big Question for December is “What did you learn about learning in 2008?”  It’s good to reflect, and using the end of the calendar year is a traditional time.  Consequently, I trolled back through a year of blog posts.  Whew! I saw several recurrent threads, but the strongest one is on learning to learn.  I think we’ve seen more focus on that this year, particularly with Tony Karrer & Michelle Martin’s ... .  But that’s another month’s big question.

    Monday, December 1, 2008
We are going to continue a tradition in the Big Question ... The Big Question for December is: What did you learn about learning in 2007? If you are a blogger, I would highly recommend taking this as an opportunity to go back through your blog posts over the year and looking for any "aha moments" or highlight the posts that you think were the best/most interesting. You might want to look back at some discussions going on during the last two yearly recaps: 2007 - What Did You Learn about Learning? 2008 - Past experiences. Present Challenge. Future ...

  • Big Question
I was very excited to find that my "Opportunity Knocks" question from 10/14/08 (see below) was the basis for The Big Question for November on Network Feedback on the Learning Circuits Blog? Thanks for the mention, Tony! I'll be watching the replies to this month's question very closely.

  • ASTD's Big Question for December: New Learning
The ASTD Big question this month is What did you learn about learning in 2007? I learn so much all the time from students, clients and colleagues, it is hard to narrow it down to just one or two things, but I'll try. Here are a few of the lessons I have learned. Mostly about the power of the network and Web 2.0 tools. First, I learned how far a digital asset can travel if people find it has value. One of my student's YouTube videos Educational Uses of Second Life ... distribute content that is open and accessible to as many learners as possible. • Learning Circuits Blog Big Question: E-Learning
The Learning Circuits Blog Big Question for October is about E-Learning, specifically: What advice would you give to someone new to the field (of E-Learning). Where do you start? Particular tools you should explore? Resources you should read? Videos/screencasts you should watch? What would your To Learn List look like? I’m a current grad student in the Instructional Systems program at Florida State University . I can’t bash my program, because it’s great. I also create E-Learning as a technical course developer at EMC . My list will ...

  • The Right Place to Find Help: ASTD's Big Question
This month's ASTD Big Question on the Learning Circuit's Blog is about Social Networking and finding help and expertise if you have a question or a concern for which you need input and/or advice. The basic question is " If you need input from people, where's the best place to ask?" • Learning Circuits April Big Question: Are We There Yet
The Learning Circuit's Blog question for this month is " ILT and Off-The-Shelf Vendors, What Should they Do ?" I am going to answer that question by recanting a story from Gadgets, Games and Gizmos for Learning . In high school, I literally had a lesson on how to fold a map. The lesson was part of a six week class on how to read and use maps. I vividly remember the lesson because it confounded me how re-folding a simple piece of paper could be so darn frustrating. I always had the last flap inside out. Instead of the nice map cover, I had an obscure piece of Pennsylvania highway ...

  • Everyone is a Manager - March - The Big Question
What Would You Do to Support New Managers? I was just reminded of the big question while cruising reader.google.com ...my RSS reader of choice these days. Our fearless uber-learning-blogger Tony Karrer points out Dave Lee's concern that there hasn't been much discussion about this month's question. So, I'll add some fuel for thought! I'm not sure I totally understand the question. It looks like some of us are answering the question by discussing how much training we give to management/leadership programs and, as a trainig department, how we support the middle manager ...
  • List to Learn, Learn to List
This month's ASTD Big Question is, again, a series of questions. Apparently one BIG question is not enough for the learning and development community. We aim to exceed expectations. If you have a to-learn list and are willing to share, and willing to share how you work with that list, that would likely be helpful information. I constantly have a "to-learn" list. Some of the items are necessary and some are "pie-in-the-sky." I tend to have two methods of working on the list. One way is what I call "wandering." Using that technique, I will open up a piece of software or google a ...

  • Help, I have an Instructional Design Master's Degree and I Can't Create E-Learning
This month's ASTD Big Question relates to a person who graduated from a theory-only program in Instructional Design and was not provided with the experience of actually creating instruction using any of the latest tools. So the question is: What advice would you give to someone who has no experience with e-learning development tools? Where do you start? Particular tools you should explore? Resources you should read? Videos/screencasts you should watch? What would your "To Learn List" look like? Holding myself back, I will calmly answer the question as per Tony's request to ...

  • What I Need NOW
Maybe it's the stress I'm suffering - but I can only look at what I need right now.... For an ILT or content provider to be worthwhile to me - they need to be able to do the following: - Give me case studies. The good content folks listen to their customers and figure out how their customers have adapted their content to their purposes. Then they share..... - Help me with the implementation process. Implementation is ugly. And it's not all about training. They need to be around for the support weeks. The weeks where we are all being bombarded by phone calls from people wondering ...

  • Questions, Questions and More Questions
To answer the question at ASTD's Learning Circuits Blog , I am going to try to stick to Tony's initial thought of specific questions and dive very deep into the technique I use when consulting for a needs assessment or evaluation. So, I first ask questions of the stakeholders: Why do you think this is a problem? Have you every tried to ... stakeholders (usually management) know what is going on in the trenches (hint, they rarely do).I use similar questions but ...

Some great posts are already out there around the Big Question for January: Quality vs. Speed . You can find them listed in the post. One thing that is definitely clear from the posts so far is that there seems to be a really difference of opinion around: While you may be able to reduce development time via rapid tools, can you speed up analysis and design and still maintain quality? Does iteration work? When? If we didn't have constraints on time/cost, would we ... must go down? There also are quite a few questions that the responses raise in my mind that I'm still grappling ...

  • April 2008 Big Question
The Learning Circuits Blog big question for April is "What would you like to do better as a Learning Professional?" The simple answer to this question is " push back more ." This can be applied on many levels, but I am primarily speaking of pushing more on ROI and evaluations . I learned very early on that Analysis and Evaluations are the first things to get cut from a learning project. In actuality, the same is true for many technology related projects. While some of the projects I'm involved in do include an Analysis and Evaluation, there are other times where customers ...
  • Big Question - Dec 2007
I do a variant of this exercise 3-4 times per year. This iteration of the Big Question allows me to think about past, present, and future on a more professional and public level. What will I remember most about 2006? 1) Finally bringing up the last department on the Electronic Medical Record. 5 years of paper to computer conversions in 2 different institutions comes to a close. Not a moment too soon..... 2) Bribing my boss into letting me attend eLearning 2006 and NOT another health care vendor conference. As a result, I managed to escape my isolation from the eLearning ...

  • The Big Question
Tony Karrer is moderating "The Big Question" on the Learning Circuits blog . The question for December is "What did you learn about learning in 2007?" Obviously, there were many things I learned in 2007 (I think most people can say this or else there are some serious issues). I've learned just how small the training community is and how if you know a few key people, you can pretty much cover the community (I've appreciated getting to know Tony, Mark, Karl, etc ... asked the question, "Who reads the instruction manual before playing a game", and one person (out of ~100) actually ...
