"IBM Crafts Web 3.0 Collaboration Tools" (PC World)
... story link ) **As an aside, I love the new editing UI in Typepad...good job guys! So IBM is releasing something called OpusUna (which means something like "work as one"); "OpusUna enables participants to collaborate and communicate from within
the same browser space, incorporating widgets, audio, and video cameras
to display themselves on the screen. IBM envisions, for example,
collaboration on patient care via sharing of medical images. Financial
traders also could collaborate from around the world." Right now I guess its only working in Safari...?? Anybody know any ...

collaborative documents
Today a few of my colleagues and I are testing software to work on collaboratively. We selected three possibilities a pbwiki , coventi pages and google documents . All of them have different applications, so we will have to see which software we like the most. For what: to get six syllabi that cover the same topic - but are given by different professors - to get them all into one final syllabus that covers the content and is satisfactory to all. That is why we are looking for something that keeps track of all the versions and allows easy comparison between versions. The software ...

long live demo's: comparing shareable notebooks the speedy way
Today I had planned to compare different shareable notebooks with one another. Up until now I used the free version of Evernote to make my personal notebook, but it is time for a change that fits better with the ideas I have in mind. You could ofcourse use a wiki for this purpose, but I wanted something that gave me the immediate ability to add (almost) any type of document, whether it is audio, video, text... and which allows me to make note pages that look chaotic, because that is the way I like to start my search and filtering for content and knowledge. A quick search with ...

document sharing software
There are a lot of softwares out there for document sharing. But graphically speaking Issuu says it all. The UI is beautifully done and it gives the user/reader the impression he can almost scroll through the pages of a document. Although Issuu offers some interactivity (sharing, bookmarking, commenting) it is a pity they only accept pdf-documents. Just take a look at the educause document the Horizon report . For a complete range of formats you need to go to Scribd or ... to share your documents. Scribd is less catchy then issuu, the fact that it has a very broad range of documents to ...

video exploring day
This year we will start vodcasting (video on demand) at the institute. We were already dabbling with it, but ... it is coming along now and we will soon start with informative movies for our new students. In a later stage these students will be motivated to publish their material. In this quest for easy access and information I came across the amazing ustream.tv . The Web surely works amazingly quick. in house our aim is to: - publish ...

More ammo for the next time someone asks "what good can you do with Twitter?"
You tell them you can do something incredibly useful like troll it for professionals in your field that it might be valuable for you to follow. Jane Hart has posted the " 100+ (E-)Learning Professionals to follow on Twitter ." Now that looks like using a blog and not twitter but now since somehow (Jane probably just needed someone in the O's) I squeaked onto the list, I am watching my Twitter followers light up with new folks thus broadening my community of practice.
So ask those folks if they think it might be valuable to somehow pick the Top 100 people in your field and then be able ...

Implementation: Evaluating Collaboration
One of the goals of Web 2.0 and other technologies is to foster collaboration. But, there seems to be an issue with how many people actually collaborate. According to many sources, less than 1% of the people who visit blogs or wikis actually contribute or collaborate with the author of the wiki or blog. This is called the 1% rule. One of the major issues with collaboration in an academic or even a corporate setting is determining how to evaluate each individual's contribution to the overall collaboration. How do you ensure equal participation? How to you judge one person's work ...

Collaborative Online Assignments
I ran across a nice post Clive on Learning: In praise of collaborative online assignments where he suggests that we provide collaborative assignments in addition to self-paced, individual eLearning. I'm a big fan of this approach and have tried it in a few different forms. Another was providing group assignments towards the tail end of particular sections. Honestly, I've run into enough problems with this kind of approach in terms of ...

Blogging and Collaboration
Tom Haskins has written a couple interesting posts on collaboration in the Web 2.0 world: Four phases of collaboration and After blogging - collaboration . I think his picture of and description of the Four Phases is fairly accurate, but I also think that there's likely a depth element to it. One of the wonderful things about blogging has been the ease with which collaboration occurs. It's natural. You quickly jump to Phase 4. However, part of it is that there's little risk and no expectation of an on-going relationship. If you look at some of the posts around blogging from ...

Changing Skills for the Learning Facilitator
THIS POST asks, “Do you need to be a subject matter expert to run subject-based community?” If I were to change it slightly, “Do you need to be a trainer or SME to be a Learning Facilitator in the social learning world?” Then I got thinking, what are the skills of this Learning Facilitator? How are they different than an instructional designer or a trainer?
Here are some initial thoughts. A learning facilitator will:
Connect people together
Encourage discussion and conversation, while at the same time monitor to make sure that the conversations are ...

A Reflection of Transitions

Yesterday was my first official day (this year) back in the school world . We were asked to introduce ourselves. I mentioned that I was first hired on as a Training Manager.
A lot has happened in this time. My focus has changed dramatically. My day-to-day concerns are now centered around implementing, maintaining and strategizing around social learning / network / media initiatives with a side plate of formal training. I am about to give a training this morning on how to hold difficult conversations, but these type of occurrences (where I do the actual ...

Blogging and Collaboration
Great post by Tom Haskins says - among other things: If a blog post does not feed back into the blogosphere, that's not blogging. That's merely informative -- or it's the formal learning we did before blogging took hold. If the value of your blogging is not endlessly recursive, then you can conceive of your value like before. If a blog post goes nowhere, that's a web log: an online personal diary. Blogging is the repercussions and the reciprocities from responding to responses. That circularity transforms how you are valuable and how you learn. That's what emerges naturally by blogging ...

Wedding 25.0 (A Knowledge Collaboration!)
This will be my only post this week ... no engineering stuff ... no Web 2.0 information, because Molly and I have achieved Wedding 25.0 ! This new love sharing application will be released to the general public on Wednesday, May 21st (our 25th Wedding Anniversary)!
How does one define Wedding 25.0? Here is my answer ... In 25 years of marriage I have only worn one piece of jewelry, my wedding ring. In those 25 years I've only taken off my ring three times. Once on my wedding night, to read the inscriptions with my bride ... once on my 15th wedding anniversary when Molly and I ...
