Ten rules of thumb
I was looking through some course materials from a few years back and found these ten rules of thumb for adult learning. They predate the debate on formal/informal learning, so relate mainly to the design of formal training interventions. Anyway, the issues that interest me are: (1) can they be validated by research? (2) do they still apply in practice? (3) are there more relevant/useful rules of thumb out there? All of these require your help. Provide overviews Build ... frequent use of stories and anecdotes Allow learners to learn through experience Encourage and facilitate collaboration ...

Changing Skills for the Learning Facilitator
THIS POST asks, “Do you need to be a subject matter expert to run subject-based community?” If I were to change it slightly, “Do you need to be a trainer or SME to be a Learning Facilitator in the social learning world?” Then I got thinking, what are the skills of this Learning Facilitator? How are they different than an instructional designer or a trainer?
Here are some initial thoughts. A learning facilitator will:
Connect people together
Encourage discussion and conversation, while at the same time monitor to make sure that the conversations ...

Great Example of Group Collaboration - e-Book: E-learning Concepts and Techniques
I found this via Eric Tremblay - e-Learning Acupuncture: Q: Does group collaboration online work? E-Learning Concepts and Techniques is a collaborative e-book project by Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania's Department of Instructional Technology students and guest authors. It was a project-based assignment for the online class, E-Learning Concepts and Techniques Spring 2006 . As an example - look at the section on Instructional Design Models . Quite well done. This is both a great reference piece and a great introduction to eLearning. A link to the assignment . Great stuff.

FCVW (Day 1)
I attended the Federal Consortium on Virtual Worlds last week, and apart from several technical/sound glitches, the conference went very well. There was a large contingent of Federal agencies interested in leveraging the potentials of virtual worlds for improving training, education, collaboration, etc. These are a few notes from Day 1. Larry Johnson from New Media Consortium (NMC) was the keynote speaker. He emphasized that the community was gathered to discuss "worlds" (not "games"), and that many saw VW's as the evolution of the 3D Internet. He highlighted that VW's would ...
