Back from T'Giving and Headed Off to I/ITSEC
Saturday, November 29, 2008
OK...so I get one day of rest to do laundry and then I head off to the Interservice and Industry, Training, Simulation and Education Conference (IITSEC). If you are not within the U.S. Dept of Defense sphere or its international partners, then let me hip you to this gig. Imagine 15-20K people from all over the world who deal in training, simulation and education for various militaries. Now imagine an expo floor (pdf), kinda like COMDEX meets E3 meets an arms dealer. Now toss in a program full of 'paper sessions' with titles like: "Semantic Web Technology for Training to ...

IABTI Conference
My colleagues and I recently submitted a paper/presentation for the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI) Conference. This was their annual training and technology conference. We presented on some of the training programs we are working on, and we also gave a primer on trends in the learning field. One of the more remarkable things was a simple question asked by my colleague. Presenting to a room of about 100 people, she asked who ... community. I'm not saying that learning conferences are bad...far from it. It's just that sometimes we suffer ...

Live Blogging the Learning Technologies Conference
The Learning Technologies Conference in Portland, Oregon is happening as I type. Christine Martell , Michele ... IS NOT training. Unlike #1, we absolutely must separate these two. Until we do we cannot grasp the advantages of using Web 2.0 tools for learning. They fit very nicely together, but are not synonyms.
Training = Delivery. Social Learning = Creating the learning with others. Training = 1:many. Social Learning = many:many or many:1 where the one is you ... for your learning. Not the training department, not your teacher, not your mother - YOU. Flip that, and you are ...

Off to the Training Conference
So today is an incredible day of travel, 6 hours from France to Philly and then 5 more hours to Salt Lake City. Still, worth the trip for the training conference. Already have many dinner plans for a few evenings, good time to see old friends and I got a lot done for my three presentations on the plane. In honor of the conference, look for me to be blogging at the conference blog Training Tech Solution . And if you are thinking about adding games, simulations or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Play Games better known as MMORPGs, to your training agenda...check out the editor's ...

Using Twitter at DevLearn
My eyes were very much opened to Twitter at the last eLearning Guild conference . About 15 of us used Twitter to…
Keep in touch with other conference attendees, co-workers, and friends,
Tell others about good and bad conference sessions (ex. “Come check out session 702, it’s great!!”), and to
Arrange dinner outings (ex. “Interested in dinner? A group of us will meet in the hotel lobby at 6:30…”).
I’m betting there will be tons more Twitter activity at DevLearn coming up in a few weeks. The official DevLearn Twitter page is ...

SL Question - How do you start sending staff into Second Life for training?
I certainly haven't got all the Second Life lingo yet, but I'll try to pose my question here anyway. I was looking at a virtual conference in Second Life coming up that had some health care topics involved. Thinking about this I thought neat, I could register and give it a try to see what was covered and how they even do a conference in SL . I then wondered though, if I wanted to create/send coworkers into SL for a virtual experience how would that be done. I realize it would take some time to get land and create my area (Sim? is that right?), but then what. Would you just tell ...

I/ITSEC Day 3
I'm currently sitting at the Orlando airport getting ready to head back home from a great I/ITSEC conference. Today was spent wrapping up on the expo floor. Although I always wish that I had more time to spend with some of the vendors, I did manage to cover the entire explo floor. I attended one paper session on experiential learning. Ironically, the presenter was a colleague I use to work with at the National Defense University while I was at CTC. It wasn't planned, and he was only filling in because the primary speaker couldn't make it. This year (more than all of the ...

DevLearn 2008 - Day 1 Recap
Day 1 of DevLearn 2008 kicked off today with a great keynote from Tim O’Reilly ( @TimOReilly ), where he walked us through the Web 2.0 movement and how it has impacted learning and training. Here are some of the notes I took during his keynote:
We should always try to follow the “alpha-geeks.” These are the people who are constantly hacking and studying things in unconventional ways. They are often the ones who come up with the most innovative solutions and they tend to have the most fun. If we follow their fun stuff, it’ll usually lead us to ...
