Back from T'Giving and Headed Off to I/ITSEC
    Saturday, November 29, 2008
OK...so I get one day of rest to do laundry and then I head off to the Interservice and Industry, Training, Simulation and Education Conference (IITSEC). If you are not within the U.S. Dept of Defense sphere or its international partners, then let me hip you to this gig. Imagine 15-20K people from all over the world who deal in training, simulation and education for various militaries. Now imagine an expo floor (pdf), kinda like COMDEX meets E3 meets an arms dealer. Now toss in a program full of 'paper sessions' with titles like: "Semantic Web Technology for Training to ...

  • I/ITSEC Day 1
I'm attending the Interservice /Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ ITSEC ) which is the premier conference for the DoD on all things simulation and training related. It's always an enjoyable conference. The exhibit floor is huge (it has to be in order to fit the flight simulators and mega-booths), and it is always great seeing friends from the blogosphere , fellow colleagues, and even someone who goes to my church. The theme for the conference is " Maintaining the Edge. Transforming the Force ". Today (which was actually the second day of the conference, ...
  • I/ITSEC Day 3
I'm currently sitting at the Orlando airport getting ready to head back home from a great I/ITSEC conference. Today was spent wrapping up on the expo floor. Although I always wish that I had more time to spend with some of the vendors, I did manage to cover the entire explo floor. I attended one paper session on experiential learning. Ironically, the presenter was a colleague I use to work with at the National Defense University while I was at CTC. • Experiential Learning and "Mirror Worlds"
I got an email the other day from a listserv. I actually have no idea how I am on this mailing list (I suspect it is from a conference I attended in the past). Regardless, the title caught my eye, "Four modes of Experiential Learning". It goes on to provide a brief 2-3 sentences on each of the four modes: 1. Simulations 2. Scenarios 3. Case Studies 4. Mirror Worlds The last one particularly caught my eye. At first I was a little excited, because I thought this was going to be a new experiential learning tool that I could add to my arsenal. Turns out that it is just another term for an ...

Quote from The eLearning Guild web site: The big news this year is that, Immersive Learning Simulations work. Big time! Over 1,100 Guild members have completed and or updated the ILS survey. Of these, 380 Guild members representing over 320 different organizations have weighed in on their personal experiences creating and deploying ILS and their experiences are overwhelmingly positive, with more then 93% rating ILS as being better than other forms of rich-skill practice, and 76% reporting a positive ROI. • FCVW (Day 1)
I attended the Federal Consortium on Virtual Worlds last week, and apart from several technical/sound glitches, the conference went very well. There was a large contingent of Federal agencies interested in leveraging the potentials of virtual worlds for improving training, education, collaboration, etc. These are a few notes from Day 1. Larry Johnson from New Media Consortium (NMC) was the keynote speaker. He emphasized that the community was gathered to discuss "worlds" (not "games"), and that many saw VW's as the evolution of the 3D Internet. He highlighted that VW's would ...
