What did I learn about learning in 2008?
Wednesday, December 3, 2008
The Learning Circuit’s Blog Big Question for December is “What did you learn about learning in 2008?” It’s good to reflect, and using the end of the calendar year is a traditional time. Consequently, I trolled back through a year of blog posts. Whew!
I saw several recurrent threads, but the strongest one is on learning to learn. I think we’ve seen more focus on that this year, particularly with Tony Karrer & Michelle Martin’s Work Literacy effort, and a lot of the discussion at the Corporate Learning Trends conference (most recently).

IABTI Conference
My colleagues and I recently submitted a paper/presentation for the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI) Conference. This was their annual training and technology conference. We presented on some of the training programs we are working on, and we also gave a primer on trends in the learning field. One of the more remarkable things was a simple question asked by my colleague. Presenting to a room of about 100 people, she asked who ... community. Online Conferences and In-Person Conferences
Lisa Neal asked a great question in a comment on Learn Trends 2008 - Free Online Conference : What do you see as the main differences between in person and online conferences? I have a bunch of random thoughts on this and I'm hoping that folks will chime in. First let me start with a couple of predictions: Prediction 1 - Online only conferences will rapidly increase and will slow down in-person conferences Prediction 2 - Smaller, targeted, short-burst, rapidly planned conferences will emerge. Now, don't get me wrong, I still very much like to do in-person conferences. I ...

Experiential Learning and "Mirror Worlds"
I got an email the other day from a listserv. I actually have no idea how I am on this mailing list (I suspect it is from a conference I attended in the past). Regardless, the title caught my eye, "Four modes of Experiential Learning". It goes on to provide a brief 2-3 sentences on each of the four modes: 1. Simulations 2. Scenarios 3. Case Studies 4. Mirror Worlds The last one particularly caught my eye. At first I was a little excited, because I thought this was going to be a new experiential learning tool that I could add to my arsenal. Turns out that it is just another term for an ...

Conference Wiki Examples
Someone asked me for an example of a conference using a Wiki both for organizers during planning, evaluating proposed sessions, etc. and for attendees with session pages, participant lists, that kind of stuff. Certainly we did parts of this for Corporate Learning Trends 2007 . It was more aimed at the attendee side. I can say that this made pulling things together for the conference significantly easier. And we even had people pitch in to do things like adding calendar files, automatic time conversion, profiles and questions for sessions. For planning this year, we relied on Google ...

Add .vcf files next to each ... bloggers are writing about the conference. Let conference calendars know about this event I'm sure more of these ...

If you want to stay up to date without going through the hassle of searching multiple web sites, blogging, networking, reading journals/magazines/books, taking classes, attending conferences...basically everything you should be doing, then here is a great web site. eLearning Learning is "a community that tries to collect and organize the best information on the web that will help you learn and stay current on eLearning." First Post
At the recent ASTD conference in Atlanta, I attended Tony Karrer' s presentation on "eLearning 2.0". He discussed several technologies I had heard about, but have not had time (due to dissertation writing) to interact with. More importantly, he challenged everyone in the audience to become an active blogger...not necessarily for the benefit of others, but for their own continual learning and development. I greatly appreciated Tony's presentation and this blog is evidence that I have accepted Tony's challenge. In a way, doctoral programs forces one to continually read and stay on top ...

The latest trends in mobile technology and content were given in speed tempo at the conference future-of-mobile.com .
