Personal learning environments
From his posting , Stephen Downes sounds like he didn't really enjoy giving his talk on personal learning environments here in Boston yesterday, what with all that having to connect with "corporate e-learning industry types". PLEs - what are we talking about here?
Donald Clark left the following comment on my posting about personal learning environments: "The term PLE is, in ... - learning is at best a small part of it, a by product, not it's sole purpose. Environment - the PLE isn't the environment, the internet is." It seems that what Donald is describing is essentially a customised home page, an individualised ... . Unlike Donald, I can see a usefulness in the term 'personalised learning environment' but not if this is restricted to the digital domain. As I describe in my previous post on the topic: "My personalised learning environment is ...

Is there anything Moodle can't do?
Over the past two months I've been working extensively with the open source virtual learning environment (VLE) Moodle . I've been using it in three ways: To provide support for a predominantly classroom-based course (pre and post course activities, forums, wiki, etc.). To support a predominantly online course in the usual way. To build an online community for a potential audience of many thousands of course graduates. Starting as a complete beginner, I have found Moodle extremely easy to learn (in spite of pretty awful online help) and I have been able to create what I want ...

Cognitive Fitness
Chris Brannigan of Caspian Learning alerted me to Cognitive Fitness , an article by Roderick Gilkey and Clint Kilts in the Harvard Business Review, which you can download online for US$6.50. The byline to the article gives you the gist: "New research in neuroscience shows you how to stay sharp by exercising your brain." Now brain training is already in vogue, but Gilkey and Kilts (try saying that with false teeth) are aiming this at the executive, particularly one who is getting on a bit. In essence they're emphasising the importance of keeping your brain active and stimulated ...

Moomis
As someone who uses Moodle as a tool to support blended learning projects for several of my corporate clients, I was interested to hear Mark Tointon's speak at the recent eLearning Network showcase about some new add-ons for Moodle which are specifically designed to support corporate use of the tool. As Mark explained, there are good reasons why Moodle has a hard job reaching out to corporate users: the mortorboard logo the naive font the friendly name its origins in academia the fact that it is free! These problems of perception can be overcome, but ...

There's been quite a bit of discussion going on around Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and personal learning environments. Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment
I've been reading a lot over the past few months around Personal Learning Environments and a lot of related material ... knowledge workers (including myself), there should be no separation between my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my ... environments that provide support for these need to operate together. Personal Learning Environments - Stephen Downes
I was able to sit in on a session this year and I so listened to Stephen Downes talk about PLEs. I've been following Stephen for a couple years and so it was a pleasure and honor to not only hear him speak, but to sit on a panel discussion with him (I'll cover more on the panel discussion in another post). But reading The Bamboo Project blog reminded of how our digital lives are spread all over, and the idea of a PLE is quite compelling. Michele's post My Personal Learning Environment is GREAT! If you are new to the whole idea of PLEs then you should check out a PLE in action. I ...

Innovating in the Corporate Environment
One challenge for many large companies is ... how does one encourage innovation and creativity in corporate environments which often push employees to make "safe" decisions? After all, isn't product feature creep the easiest way to enhance what one already knows? Our customers always want more enhancements to existing products, or so we think! This kind of engineering design often leads to "bloatware". In the software arena, take a look at the Yahoo portal or the MS Office suite of products. Compare and contrast these examples to the Google user interface. I ...

Definition: Massively Multi-learner Online Learning Environment (MMOLE)
Massively Multi-learner Online Learning Environment: MMOLE is a genre of computer generated learning environments in ... computer keyboard and/or mouse. The avatars are able to move independently through the virtual environment. As the learner moves through the environment the computer generates new graphics in real-time to give the learner feedback on their position in the environment and the actions taken by themselves and others within the environment. The learning can occur formally through a class-like environment or a scripted simulation or the learning can occur informally through ...
