LMS Name & Logo Created, If I Could Just Get the LMS to Look as Nice
Thursday, October 9, 2008
I think I've got it. With a little more brainstorming with a different colleague we decided we liked SOL. So we added an S on the end and now have SOLS, the Southlake Online Learning System. Ooooh sounds so fancy you say. Then I played with some logo designs I'm sure Corporate Communications will never approve. Well here's hoping they do. I think they're kind of neat and it was a nice distraction for the last 1/2 hour of my day. Now all I need is to get the LMS running and looking just as good. I did get a new version of the system loaded up today. Some good new fixes ...

Learning Systems
... certain kinds of learning systems. I've received a couple of good comments on my recent post, EPSS and ePerformance . One ... something is a learning system (or learning) vs. something is eLearning, it conjures very distinct ideas of what I'm talking ... performed. I agree with Valerie that the best learning systems are those where the performance is close to or part of the learning. But my challenge is this: What do you envision when I talk about "Learning" or "Learning System" or "eLearning" as compared to "Support" or "Support System" or "eSupport"? For most people learning implies training ahead ...

OpenAcademic...worth watching
Like I said a few posts back, we are at our worst when we try to create our own learning system thingy. However, OpenAcademic is not about an enterprise vendor riding the latest trend. This is the marriage of Elgg, Drupal, Moodle, and Mediawiki. Wow! Its like the snickers bar of learning: Lots of the most yummy open source platforms rolled into one. This helps answer many of the questions I receive like, "how do we decide which to use, wikis, blogs, or social networks", or "how can we make them work together". The bad part is now I need to update ...

A tale of two experts on m-Learning - The People's Guide to mLearning
I want to raise a flag here in regards to self-directed learning. We can't yet guarantee that we have such learners (to the contrary). So just providing access is not sufficient, we need to push support. I think we can do one more thing, and we should: help individuals learn to learn. Hence my involvement in the Meta-Learning Lab. That can be accomplished through a layer on top of our learning systems. Imagine, a learning system that not only meets your immediate needs, but develops you over time!

What would I see if I rode on a beam of light? - Donald Clark
Traditional learning systems have typically been centralized and operate on the principle that learners are unable to decide what they need to learn, thus the system does it for them, which in turn creates a vicious cycle -- put the learners in a system that does very little to encourage critical thinking, formal reasoning, or meta-learning; then tell them they are unable to decide what they need to learn, thus others will have do it for them.

Online Training vs eLearning
Training is problematic. This relates to the discussions in Learning Systems and EPSS and ePerformance. ... I don't remember what I was reading, but the post/article differentiated learning as what the learner does and training as what we do to the person - and hopefully they learn. What's interesting is that eLearning has become pretty much synonymous with Online Training as opposed to use of technology for various kinds of learning. In a world: where we have to be responsible for our learning, where learning and work are often not separate activities, where there's ...
