It's Hacks to You!
Thursday, November 27, 2008
MIT World has reworked their service, and all the video is now converted to Flash. Yea! This means all their videos run smoother, quicker and don't required one to use Real Video. In addition, MIT has brought online a new user interface that makes it easier to explore content and learn new ideas. However, as today is Thanksgiving in America, I will review some lighter fare from MIT:

Sun, Elite, and the future
Symposium, Karie Willyerd showed samples of how Sun Microsystems is preparing to greet the workforce of 2020. This is a group that learns from nano-nuggets. Sun is constructing a platform that makes the nuggets available; you can mine for them ... converge. Once again, the approach was to build the sandbox, not to pin down what people do with it.
Not only are Sun ... thing. Sun and ILA are developing what I call learnscapes . A learnscape is the platform where knowledge ...

Jing tool for help or FAQ movies
Today I used Jing to make a help movie. The Jing tool from Techsmith is a very handy, quick tool to make screencaptures. The benefits are: it is free (limited to 5 minute movies), you can share the movie with others or embed it somewhere. It is amazingly simple. The installation is easy. After the installation a small 'sun' will be put on the desktop. That 'sun' gives you access to the controls of Jing. The controls are simple: capture, history and more. The capture ... (= 'sun') will show on your desktop. If you want to start capturing a video, you just click on 'capture' and you ...

In my listing of Alternatives to Second Life , many packages were missed. Here are two more. MPK20:Sun's Virtual Workplace "Wonderland" The MPK20 virtual world is also known as Wonderland. Sun employees can accomplish their real work, share documents, and meet with colleagues using natural voice communication. Plans for future updates include the ability to share applications in the virtual environment, and to link whiteboards in physical meeting rooms with the virtual space to show up in both online and offline worlds. Silver lining around clouds of layoffs
Its nice to see that we are not alone in the tech industry dealing with massive staff reductions. Creating passionate users discusses the Sun layoffs. So in staying true to Kathy's message I will also highly recommend the following little flash video created by fellow Phoenician Blogger Pamela Sims . Today just might be your independence day. If you have been "pushed out", or have taken the bold move to jump out, put it on your calendar and celebrate. La Californie
Uta and I spent the afternoon at a friend’s private vineyard over the hill and to the east of our place in Berkeley. The sun was shining, row upon row of vines held clusters of purple grapes, you might get a whiff of rosemary from the breeze, and my senses told me I was in Burgundy or Provence.
Mind you, three or four years ago, this was a typical Northern California hillside, a tinderbox of brown, dry grass. These bountiful vines weren’t grown from seed.
The tastes, the ambiance, the conversations, wow, it doesn’t get much better than this. Eat ...

James Gee moves to ASU
UofW-Madison lost a great scholar recently...NO! Not like that!...James Gee is moving to the Valley of the Sun ( Phoenix, AZ for my global readers). " James Paul Gee has been appointed the Mary Lou Fulton Presidential Chair in Literacy Studies within ASU 's Mary Lou Fulton College of Education ." I must say, I'm psyched! Well I actually got to go away this weekend camping. Yeah!!! One final hurrah of the summer and so thankfully the last long weekend of the summer was full of heat and sun. Back to Work
Monday was my first day back to work after almost three months. I put in a nice five hour effort, appearing on site at our new office space. Citrus colored walls, big windows that let the sun pour in. Not too bad. So. What have I been doing all that time? Enjoying the best summer vacation/maternity leave of my life. My husband is a stay-at-home-dad, so we had the benefit of two parents home all summer with the kids. And a completely mellow baby, who appears to be a good sleeper. The way it should be! I did this: A lot of this: Some pleasure ...

Out & About: A Change is Coming to Higher Ed
The future of higher education is online. Unfortunately, many faculty and administrators can't see the tidal wave of online learning that is approaching but it is approaching. The cost of higher education is untenable in its current form. Just like manufacturing was 20 years ago, same with financial institutions, insurance...those industries were changed forever by technology...higher education is next. It will be stripped to the bare bones before too long. As Scott McNealy, Chairman of Sun stated: Technology has to play a huge role in education. (It's) changed ...
