Michael Wesch at #OEB08
Thursday, December 4, 2008
Michael Wesch has been social mediated innumerous times because he pushes the learning agenda forward. He was keynoting at OEB08 and it was a blast. He managed to mix humor, storytelling, self-relativation and content. The topics he raised were not that new if you follow the learning sphere, but he put everything in an inspiring framework. Michael Wesch works at Kansas University and he mixes anthropology, ethnology and culture into the new learning equation. He does not only talk about it, he immediately uses it. For a quick intro, visit his youtube channel. His most famous video ...

Digital video: the new medium of choice
I was tempted to watch one of those great little Common Craft videos, the new one being Online photo sharing in simple ... implication of watching the video at midnight was that I woke up at 5.45 am buzzing with ideas for ways in which these sorts of short, simple videos could be used in learning and development, most particularly in the work I do. Great Video on the next generation workforce
Michele Martin has posted on the great new video from for the Creator of the Machine is Using Us. You've got to check it out. Send it to your teachers, friends, colleagues, managers, etc. The next generation work force is not happy about what you have to offer. Watching this reminded me of a momment I forgot to share with y'all. While listening to Lance Dublin present this week, I heard a fabulous remark in response to a trend that Lance listed. He listed this: Increased competition for Qualified Workers. When Lance asked if there are any other trends he should add this came ...

HandBrake 0.9.3: Now Converts Video Files!
My DVD ripper of choice is HandBrake . A great app, with lots of options and presets, and the best part of all: it’s free .
The bummer with previous versions was you could only convert video directly from DVD. You couldn’t re-encode existing video files. So if you wanted to convert, say, a WMV file to FLV, HandBrake was not the app ... memory with the new 0.9.3 release.
I had been relying on the excellent (but not free) VisualHub for my video conversion needs, and was saddened by its recent demise . But with HandBrake stepping in to fill the void, my ...

MyToons - Going-into-weekend video
Sorry I'm late on this weeks fun "going into the weekend" video. I was pointed to mytoons.com via a Mac podcast that I listen...sorry guys I forgot which one. I THINK it was MacCast but not sure. Anyways, the animation below is one of my favorites. Proprietary software was written to analyze the music and time the beats to the launching of the balls. Its mesmorizing to watch! Have a great weekend. You can also find it at the Internet Archive . If you don't use the IA, you really should check it out. Its a marvelous resource.

New Communication on the Web - Google Chat Video
I just tried video chat on Google and it was easy and cool. It worked really well. I think this is another important step to improved communication on the web. I really need to get a laptop with an integrated camera and mic. I wonder if this is enough justification to get a new Mac laptop? It will also be interesting to see if you can embed a chat module into other pages like Blogger and Google Sites. Time to experiment.

Do you think of either of these as eLearning? If so (or not), what are your reasons? Are you developing, or planning on developing, courseware similar to either of these? Let's get a lively discussion going here!

When I grow up...
Call me sappy, but I love this! How many schools have banned Web2.0 tools and services? How many of those kids will be ready for their future? This video takes it's style from the now popular The Machine is Using us Video and/or RSS in Plain English video, and the follow up WIKIs in Plain English . But that's the greatness of the web in action. Kids learn by copying the things they think are cool. From there they begin to develop their own style.

I put this together quickly, very late, last night. But I think it gets the point across. I recorded using IShowU which is an excellent little video screen capture tool. Social Networking in Plain English - Yeah!
These guys keep crankin' 'em out. I love it! Social Networking is also Social Learning. I think deepest learning comes from human connections and Social Networking tools make it easier than ever to connect to the people you want to learn something from, or with whom you are willing to learn with, together, collaboratively. Before there was online social networking I remember reading business books about the power of the "rollodex": Important successful people ALWAYS had a massive rollodex. At the time I remember thinking about the dozen or so people that I had on a piece of ...

Did you know?
Apparently this little gem is making the rounds within the Educators Bloggosphere (since August '06)...well worth 6mins out of your day to check this out... The original ppt presentation was created by Carl Fisch and posted at his blog The Fischbowl . Then Scott McLeod got a hold of it and edited it a little and re-released it in the format you have seen above. Repeat after me... RIP, MIX, FEED, repeat, repeat...infinity ...see...I told ya so! Most educators that I know are psyched and excited by Learning2.0. I used to be quite cynical and think "they just don't get ...

Wesch Strikes Again!
I can't get enough of this. The University of Manitoba recently posted the video of Micheal Wesch's June 17, 2008, talk entitled "A Portal to Media Literacy" where you can get a glimpse into how Micheal organized a couple of his classes at Kansas State University. He strives to create platforms of participation for students that leverage the emerging media environment. He shows how to let students participate in their learning in an open way to harness the 'upload world' they are familiar with. Some great illustrations of practices in wiki and RSS aggregator usage are in this video ...

USTREAM.tv - Classroom on a single web page
So, go figure. I just post about Teachertube and then see this post (via lifehacker ), and hear Leo Leporte is using it for TWIT . It's USTREAM.tv ! Anyone with a webcam can get their feed sent live to a web page. This is cool and has incredible learning potential! Don't you think? I'm checking with them now to see if I can get this up and running for my daughter's Alcatraz swim this week.

Video Ratings
... blog reader who captures a lot of different videos within their organization. They have "over a couple of thousand of video and audio clips that new hires and tenured employees are currently using for on-boarding and training." What they want to do is to help employees better access the video content. They've seen viddler which allows people to tag specific sections within the video. They are interested in that capability, but also in rating the videos, and especially rating portions of the videos. That makes me wonder ... To me it seems that having video rating and/or video ...

Google and video conferencing?
While it’s not video conferencing, Google has added video functionality to Gmail. Many tools (notably skype) already offer similar (but superior) functionality. I’m interested in where Google will go with this. It would be exciting to have video conferencing options available for educators who are already using Google Docs, gmail, and other services.
