I’m new to eLearning - Where do I start?
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
I held a Breakfast Byte session at DevLearn for people new to the eLearning field. Here are some miscellaneous tips and tricks I provided during this session to help get people started off on the right foot:

Personally, I consider eLearning to be the intersection of learning and technology, where we help people do their jobs more effectively and more efficiently. But you'll probably hear at ... eLearning tools before purchasing them. This applies to authoring tools, simulation tools, Learning Management ...

Immersive Learning Simulations Produce Results!
Quote from The eLearning Guild web site: The big news this year is that, Immersive Learning Simulations work. Big time! Over 1,100 Guild members have completed and or updated the ILS survey. Of these, 380 Guild members representing over 320 different organizations have weighed in on their personal experiences creating and deploying ILS and their experiences are overwhelmingly positive, with more then 93% rating ILS as being better than other forms of rich-skill practice, and 76% reporting a positive ROI. Authoring Simulation Genres: Branching Stories
One well-understood simulation genre is branching stories . In branching stories, students make multiple-choice decisions along an ongoing sequence of events around what to say to another person in a given situation. The decisions impact the evolution of the story, ultimately terminating in either successful or unsuccessful outcomes. Their ease of use, ease of deployment, and content style make them highly appropriate for entry-level salespeople, call center representatives, freshmen, customer-facing retail positions, and entry-level managers. Any high-turnover position should be ...

How not to talk about simulations
... to talk about simulations. The moderator starts out by asking the group why they are interested in simulations. One says, "Oh, I love simulations. I lead role-plays all of the time in my sales class, and they work really well." Then someone says, "That's right. I build online certification programs, and simulations are critical." Another says, "I agree. I love simulations. My kids play computer games all of the time. They are great." Another says, "Simulations are the best. Personal spam or great research tool?
Yesterday an email query from Clark Aldrich struck me as oddly impersonal, since Clark and I usually converse in real time. He asked, “What is the most important thing that needs to be said about educational simulations?”
Then I realized it was a question sent via LinkedIn. I don’t know how many of Clark’s contacts he asked but he has more than two hundred, so it could be quite a few.
What’s next? I thought. Using direct mail marketing techniques on one’s friends? And then I reconsidered. “Why not?” I decided to ask a question of my ...

A lecture format that a sim-person could love
I travel all over the world presenting research and ideas on simulations (typically to a larger group, before working more closely with a smaller group). But I am constantly stuck with the same conundrum - how do you capture the spirit of simulations while presenting material? (And just to say, I am no Thiagi. I cannot engage and delight anywhere near his level, if at all). I was at the Army War College on Friday, and tried something for the first time that was really great. I loaded up a copy of my wiki-like blog on each of the student computers. I gave them free permission ...

SimWord of the Day: Rules

The Only Training Metric that Matters
There is only one training metric that matters: the person responsible for the training program gets promoted. Any other metric, be it smilesheets or increased organizational productivity, or stock price, is only ammunition. Now, clearly we need to tap into pure research. We need to pilot. But there are at least three reasons why this is the critical metric. 1. You can't do any good if you are fired. 2. Your clients, be they sales teams or management, live in a ... as simulation vendor. In either case, I don't want the email from someone who says, "You get it. I get it. Simulations ...

If you have been in the training industry for more than 3 years, don't bother reading this
I have given my share of speeches on simulation in the last six months. And I have come to a casual observation. It is the people who have been in the training profession for less than three years that actually make simulations happen in their organization. This is not an age thing. There are plenty of people representing all different ages that are moving ahead. This is not a male-female thing. The "newcomers" are excited to drive results. They think in terms of ... personal risks when the pay-off is significant. They are not interested in proving to me, the sim guy, how smart they ...
