The Right Place to Find Help: ASTD's Big Question
This month's ASTD Big Question on the Learning Circuit's Blog is about Social Networking and finding help and expertise if you have a question or a concern for which you need input and/or advice. The basic question is " If you need input from people, where's the best place to ask?" But, then the question breaks into sub-questions. -How to reach out ... the questions are even broken down further into more sub-questions which you can read for yourself at the original ASTD ... ...about 5 minutes. The ROI for using all five methods is phenomenal. I invest a small amount of time writing ...

List to Learn, Learn to List
This month's ASTD Big Question is, again, a series of questions. Apparently one BIG question is not enough for ... "to-learn" list. Some of the items are necessary and some are "pie-in-the-sky." I tend to have two methods of working on ... with no real objective just a need to "learn more about" a particular term, item or piece of software. The other method ... . Using the targeted method means I have a specific goal in mind and I need to learn how to achieve that goal. Interestingly, I find the wandering method tends to have better retention than the target. I target learning when I have ...

Resurgence of Media vs. Method Debate
It seems like with the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies, there has been a resurgence of the Media/Method debate. Just a quick recap of the debate to catch-up those unfamiliar with the debate... In the 1980's and 1990's, Richard Clark and Robert Kozma wrote a series of papers debating whether or not media influences learning. Clark posited that media ... different modes of educational delivery. 3) I received a random email at work (probably from attending the recent ASTD ... into the delivery methods.

Frank Nguyen - EPSS - at ASTD
Frank Nguyen is presenting at ASTD on EPSS. You can find his presentation on his site. His major points were: Search is not an effective method for performers to find information. Providing learners with more on-the-job performance support does not eliminate the need for training and there are cases where ... through search. Frank is doing great research in this area. ASTD TechKnowledge 2008 - Conference Planning
ASTD TechKnowledge 2008 is coming soon in San Antonio. Now that it's less than a month away, I thought I'd sit down and try to do some conference planning. Where to Find Old Comic?
I'm excited about the presentation I'm creating for ASTD 2008 in San Diego. However, as part of putting it together, I was searching for a comic that I know I saw years ago where people were making fun of an executive that had his assistant print out his emails and dictated his responses. Does anyone know where I would find such a comic or something like that? Or any ideas on searching for such a thing? I've tried various things on Google Images with little luck. BTW, the point I'm highlighting is how changes in technologies and/or methods can cause previous methods to become out of ...

Topic Diversity
Through the post on Conference Balance an in thinking about the keynotes at ASTD that I attended ( ASTD Keynote - Malcolm Gladwell , Dysfunctional Teams ), I realized that one of the reasons that I like going to conferences is it forces me (sometimes slowly and painfully) to get exposed to a diversity of topics. Through my PWLE methods (reading blogs, etc.) I would not have run across the concepts in Dysfunctional Teams . This was a good topic to go through and think about - and to have captured in my blog. But, if I'm suggesting that conferences should head towards ...

Why we need both live and self-paced communication
Recently we have seen the release of two annual reports - the ASTD's 2007 State of the Industry Report and Training Magazine's 2007 Industry Report . Both show similar growth in the use of e-learning in the USA. As a share of total formal training hours, the ASTD shows e-learning at approximately 25% (up from 11% five years ago), while Training Magazine shows e-learning at 30%. What caught my attention was how this 25-30% was made up, with about 2/3 asynchronous (self ... , technology made possible a wide variety of new communication methods.
