The Right Place to Find Help: ASTD's Big Question
This month's ASTD Big Question on the Learning Circuit's Blog is about Social Networking and finding help and ... the questions are even broken down further into more sub-questions which you can read for yourself at the original ASTD ... someone who might be able to answer the question. Then you had to call that person, reference the discussion with your friend and launch into an explanation of the question you wanted to have answered. That person would, possibly, answer your question for free, offer to help for a fee, or refer you to another person. If they referred you to another person, ...

Help, I have an Instructional Design Master's Degree and I Can't Create E-Learning
This month's ASTD Big Question relates to a person who graduated from a theory-only program in Instructional Design and was not provided with the experience of actually creating instruction using any of the latest tools. So the question is: What advice would you give to someone who has no experience with e-learning development tools? Where do you start? Particular tools you should explore? Resources you should read? Videos/screencasts you should watch? What would your "To Learn List" look like? Holding myself back, I will calmly answer the question as per Tony's request to ...

Do we really need to design differently for the so called "Digital Natives"?
This month, I worked with Tony Karrer to help create the ASTD Big Question (which always seems to be multiple questions under one big theme.) The main question is Learning design differences for Digital Natives? Of course I have strong opinions on the topic due to the fact that I've written about it many times and I spend all day with digital natives at Bloomsburg University. I'm having trouble deciding if I should rant on this topic or try to build a rational ... 1994 was born the same year that Newsweek Magazine named the Internet "Person of the Year." ASTD TechKnowledge - DevLearn Conference
I just received a question that I'm sure often is on the minds of people in eLearning - which conference they should attend (eLearning Guild DevLearn or ASTD TechKnowledge). I'm hoping that everyone can weigh in on their thoughts. Here's was the specific question (and all the information I have to go on) to help advise this person - I have been trying to decide whether to attend DevLearn 2008 or ASTD TechKnowledge in 2009. I have never attended either. I have been designing and developing elearning for about a year. Any suggestions? This person works in health care in ...

ASTD TechKnowledge 2007 - Opening Sessions
I'm at the opening session at ASTD TechKnowledge ( http://tk07.astd.org ). I'll soon be doing a session on Blogging and Social Bookmarking for Personal and Group Learning. Tony Bingham, President of ASTD, is doing his introduction, and his content is: Web 2.0, personal learning, easy distribution of software (software as a service), video is here now, push to pull, teaching Gen Y (what he calls the netGeneration). What a great setup for my presentation. Thanks Tony. And, it's somewhat surprising to see a relatively slow moving organization, ASTD, driving this discussion. One thing ...

I'm on the flight back from ASTD TechKnowledge and thought I should try to capture some initial thoughts from the conference and sessions while it was still fresh and before life clouds my memory... Find Speaker for Local ASTD Chapter
I've been approached quite a bit recently to do presentations at local ASTD chapters or to help find a speaker. The reality is that I can't afford to do free presentations at local events. In some cases, I am finding myself doing workshops locally that can then help fund it. I'm looking forward to doing more of these this next year. Design Day and the ASTD Big Question for July
I left a comment on Tony Karrer's blog about creating a "Design Day" so that everyone in the blogosphere adds a comment about the importance of instructional design as opposed to focusing on technology. And then Dennis Coxe over at Sailing by Sound picked up on my comment and posted an entry called "I Declare 'Design Day'" . It is a great entry outlining 3 elements of good design. Around the same time, the ASTD Learning Circuits Blog had the July "Big Question ... the person's lips...do you really need video or would audio work just as well. Let's move the argument from ...

The Chapter's President Elect shared some initiatives I'm personally looking forward to for next year.
Here's a great opportunity for local ASTD Chapter members: The board's looking to conduct many affordable workshops next year. To pull this off, the chapter will naturally be looking for membership support to host meeting venues and speakers to host workshops next year. The upside: there will be plenty of opportunities to gain visibility next year if you're willing to share a bit of yourself and your expertise.

Yesterday, at my presentation Introduction to eLearning 2.0 - ASTD OC , I mentioned that Yahoo MyWeb had a few features that del.icio.us was sorely missing. And that had made me previously conclude: Yahoo MyWeb better than del.icio.us, rollyo, et.al. for Personal / Group Learning However, I told everyone that del.icio.us had been acquired by Yahoo and it was likely that slowly these features would get integrated. Instant Session/Speaker Ratings at Conferences?
Great question posed by Mark Oehlert - I will say that it is interesting that in addition to the slides you can also rate each session and leave comments about each. Total transparency. As we look for ways to improve conferences , this is a point we should ponder on. How would you feel if the ratings for a session you presented say at ASTD or the eLearning Guild were instantly available for public consumption? I know how I feel about this but I'd like to hear from some people - instant, visible ratings...boon or bane? I personally would love to see this happen. I often find myself ...
