Back to the Wild West
Friday, November 28, 2008
If you wanted to provide someone with an impression of the Wild West, you could show them an old John Wayne film, you could create a virtual frontier town in Second Life, or you could just introduce them to eBay. Over the past couple of years I have had cause to buy and sell some fairly high-ticket audio-visual items. First I bought a couple of Sennheiser radio mics that normally sell for about $750 each. I found them on eBay for amazing prices of around $300. True, they were coming from Hong Kong, but I thought I was probably just getting them straight from the factory. A few ...

Blue Icicle XLR to USB Mic Converter
I recently talked about the Blue Snowball USB desktop microphone I use for my eLearning narration work. Despite the explosion of consumer desktop PC audio recording and podcasting in recent years, the selection of good USB microphones is still inexplicably limited. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just plug an XLR mic into some kind of magic dongle to give it USB connectivity without needing a breakout box or mixer cluttering up your desktop? Yes it would ... and not studio-quality audio recording).
Also of interest: a brief how-to video on Blue’s ...

Recording Your Narration
In an April post , I made my case for narration in eLearning. As a learner, I love it (when done right). So as a developer, I like to create narrated courses. Many of us, for budgetary reasons, have to do our own in-house narration work. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing - I made the point in that earlier post that professional voiceover work can sound synthetic if you don’t get the right voice for your project. And I won’t even start griping about those robotic text-to-speech tools that are being foisted upon the eLearning development community (note my rant on that ...

People will evaluate better audio fidelity differently than poorer audio fidelity. I won't go into the experiments that they conducted here, but I'd thoroughly recommend you check the book out for yourself. So, audio fidelity does matter. Mobile Learning Via Audio
One thing many people seem to forget when thinking about "mobile learning" is that the one universal application that runs across all mobile phones is voice. Some really inventive voice-focused training modules can be developed and delivered all with a mish-mash of mobile phones. They can be linked to an automated voice systems and sales reps or others can simply "call in" for some training. One company that has been doing some work in this area if OnPoint Digital. Check out their Cellcast web site for more details. __ Catalog of Recommended Books, Games and Gadgets Recommended ...

Podcast Fast with GCast
Yes, that’s probably the cheesiest title I’ve ever used, I know… But I recently found out about GCast , a free service that lets you record messages using your phone and then converts them to a podcast. Sure, this is kind of similar to Jott , but I like the simplicity of GCast. It does one thing, and it does it well.
Here’s how it works: Once you set up an account (again, it’s free), you can dial into a 1-888… number, enter your PIN, and record a voice message. After hanging up, your message is immediately available as a podcast online. People can ...

Audio Search of YouTube Video Content
Google Labs has quietly rolled out a new search capability which allows one to search the audio content of YouTube videos. Right now they are only indexing political content ... thus if you want to see what Obama or McCain ... or any other politican is saying about the proposed federal bailout ... try a search on "federal reserve".
This could be huge if expanded to other content. If you only think of YouTube as a provider of whimsical video, then you are missing the boat. See my prior post on using Google Video or YouTube as a research tool, or check out my own ...

Information Architecture for Audio: Doing It Right - Boxes and Arrows
Content today is increasingly delivered by audio both online and in the real world. We have radio shows and newscasts, and in recent years, podcasts, audio books and navigation/car assistance systems have been added to the field. Audio is more emotional, as sound effects and acoustic ... audio often results in usability issues that make it difficult for users to access and understand content. That is why we need new tools to organize linear content like audio.

A blanket solution for your audio recording problems.
In a previous post , I shared with ya'll a cool little setup Chris was using for his desktop soundbooth.
Here , I found what another little trick Betsy Weber found helpful while recording audio on the road. I never actually considered it, but It seems quite reasonable. 'Matter of fact, if not for how silly it might make you look in the office, I actually see no reason why it couldn't work for your eLearning audio recording issues, as well. I laughed out loud at its simplicity. Reminds me of what good 'ol uncle Occam used to say: ...

Neat little desktop audio setup for voiceover narration in eLearning development.
Here's what sounds like (pun intended) a pretty decent audio setup for voiceover narration in eLearning courses.
Chris created his own little desktop studio sound booth using acoustic tiles glued to square pieces of foam. I'll have to think about getting a rig like Chris'; I bet he gets better sound than my little USB Plantronics headset mic.

Instructional Design: What do you get when you mix articulate presenter, with captivate, with camtasia, with webquiz ... you could get THIS
How can you mix all kinds of software's AND social media apps? That is one of the questions I have roaming about in the back of my mind. On the verge of my vacation, I wanted to test a new software ( Articulate Presenter ) and see if other software that we use to build courses with can be implemented. If you want to, you can see the result following this link (it is an nice mashup for different educational goals). It works with Flash, so sometimes he preloads to buffer the multimedia files. The final product was produced by Articulate Presenter, but I mixed in Del.icio.us, Camtasia, ...

An Open Apology to Brent Schlenker
I just finished participating in Brent's new Talkcast Corporate e-Learning Weekly . With enough participation - this could prove to be a very active discussion space. Especially since we don't get enough chances to synchronously chat with each other. And we can only type so fast.... Brent - my apologies for lack of audio. I've been having sound input problems on my laptop and had no mic. I also had a cell phone with a dead battery. MOGOPOP iPod Mobile eLearning
I just discovered MOGOPOP via Mark Oehlert at e-Clippings . Very cool! I've been talking with several people over the last few months about Podcasting, iPods, Treos, Web2.0, etc. and MOGOPOP is the first that I've seen to truly GET the whole picture right...at least for the iPod format. Many companies and training organizations are trying to figure out how to best utilize the iPod format for training and while its not technically difficult to create a simple audio podcast, most people don't realize that the iPod can to so much more. There are text, images, audio, and video ...
