I/ITSEC Day 2
Activities from Day 2 at I/ITSEC:1. Best Practices for 3D Procedural Animation - This was a paper session presented by NGrain. The best practices included: letting the SMEs do the animation, compress the animation for light-weight delivery, model orientation should be done on the table or ground, consistency (in model rotation, view angle, textual call-outs, etc.), use audio for multi-sensory absorption, and include interactivity and practice. They also mentioned that one of the true benefits of 3D models is the "Transparent View" that allows users to see inside the model. They also ...

Size of Captivate Files
In reference to my article Captivate File Size Tricks for Software Training via Simulations, I was just asked:I was hoping you could answer a real easy question for me?For an enterprise wide LMS system, would a Captivate movie (file) that is 1.5mb or less too big? I think this file size is micro, and that for real good elearning a file size of 40+mb is getting to a threshold. But these are tiny files, and I want to make sure we don't get any pushback from IT on slow load ... itself. Again, though, our experience says that 1.5MB (with audio) is not that big.If any blog readers have ...

SimWord of the Day: Full Motion Video
Full Motion Video (FMV) is a series of pictures shown in rapid succession to simulate coherent movement. It can also include an audio track. FMV can be live video, animated, or a combination. They can also have text superimposed.Full Motion Video can stand-alone, such as in a movie or television, or can be included as a cut scene in a computer game or educational simulation. FMVs, when used in a computer game or educational simulation, are pre-scripted and often pre-rendered, represent a situation where the player looses all control except to possibly skip the scene, and are usually ...

Multi-media elearning...
I'm curious what elearning designers and managers are doing with multimedia. Five years ago, text was the leper of elearning design. Video, games, simulations, and audio were intended to replace, not augment text learning. Clark Aldrich has posted on games and simulations on this forum. What are others doing? In my recent experience, text seems to be more dominant than ever (and I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing). What has caused the stall of media development? Is it expense? Several years ago our department at Red River College spent hundreds of hours in video design ...

e-Learning: In Search of a Better Definition
One of the first definitions for e-learning is ASTD's, who define it as covering a wide set of applications and processes, such as Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. It includes the delivery of content via Internet, intranet/extranet (LAN/WAN), audio- and videotape, satellite broadcast, interactive TV, and CD-ROM.
ASTD's definition is somewhat different in that it basically defines anything that is electronic ... , virtual classrooms and collaborative work spaces.
Simulations, document repositories and publishing programs.
