Learning Circuits Big Question: Avoiding Death by PowerPoint
This month the Learning Circuits Blog Big Question is about PowerPoint. The question: PowerPoint: What is Appropriate? When and Why? The big question for January: quality v speed
The Learning Circuits big question for January asks "What are the trade offs between quality learning programs and rapid e-learning and how do you decide?" Well, there's an assumption underlying this and I'm questioning it. Who says e-learning materials that take a long time to produce are necessarily high quality, let alone relevant or effective? There isn't a member of the e-learning community who hasn't worked on projects that were over-engineered, over budget ... liberally sprinkled with meaningful interactivity, stories and examples. And if even this process is too onerous ...

The big question: what did you learn about learning in 2007?
The Learning Circuits Blog has started up its monthly Big Question again and the question, perhaps appropriately as we see out what remains of the year, is 'what did you learn about learning in 2007?' I'm tempted to say 'most of it' because I've revised and revisited most of my assumptions at one point or another, not least in response to some whole new 'macro theories' ( George Siemens and Connectivism , Jay Cross and Informal Learning ) and a whole raft of micro-theories emanating from cognitive neuroscience (as just one example see my Science of Learning posting ).

My ode to PowerPoint
Regarding the Big Question, I love PowerPoint to create graphics and present findings. What is great about them is that I can first play with them for a while to get them right, then embed them in Word documents, where they are small from a size perspective, remain editable, but also print (and translate to Acrobat) incredibly well because the programs still recognize the text in them. Given that the value that I often provide to clients is create fabulous IP, this is critical. Here are some public examples of PowerPoints I have created, and please click to enlarge.
