In most cases, what is labeled “blended learning” is typically one topic, offered in numerous ways, or a hodge-podge of different training offerings under the same topical umbrella.  . . In select cases this might be a blend. e-learning vs. a person who knows little about the term. I think one place to start is to look at the competencies and skills needed for various “e-learning” jobs. E-learning, of course, encompasses many areas - courseware designer, curriculum development, online trainer, blended learning specialist, Flash programmer, game designer, research, etc. Here’s a brief listing of some of the competencies I think newbies to e-learning. . I also wrote  elearning 101 which provides an overview of e-learning adult learning and the foundation of human learning (theory, practice) If you like print books.

  • Even HR people can like e-learning
At the recent eLearning Network showcase event, I attended an interesting presentation made by Nick Timpson of my old firm Epic and Claire Little from leading psychometric test providers, SHL . SHL train something like 10,000 people a year to use their tests, most of whom are HR people. With Epic's help, SHL have moved from pure classroom-based delivery to a blend that involves self-study e-learning prior to the face-to-face event. Nothing unusual in that you might think. About time too!

  • Blended learning's a balanced meal
When you offer someone a choice of ways in which to undertake a learning activity, you may be doing them a favour by allowing them to express a preference, but you're not providing a blend. . In themselves useful, but not enough to stimulate a complete learning process. How about a sandwich? OK, but you don't want a sandwich for every meal, do you? The classroom sandwich is probably the most common blend - that's a face-to-face event in the middle, with some self-study e. ingredients, your budget and the time you have available to get it all prepared, so a blended learning solution must be devised to cater for different.

  • Who not to ask about blended learning
Try this trick at any training expo: (1) approach any booth that advertises expertise in blended learning, (2) tear off the sticker that contains the words 'blended learning', and (3) find the word 'e-learning' underneath. Yes, blended learning is, more often than not, simply a re-branding exercise for e-learning vendors still smarting from criticism that e-learning fails to deliver on all its promises. These vendors have even hi-jacked the term 'blended learning' and tried to convince us that it means e-learning (the essential component) combined with other media, typically some form of. .
