The Thinking Behind Critical Thinking Courses - Washington Post
Critical thinking is not a skill like riding a bike or diagramming a sentence that, once learned, can be applied in many situations. Instead, as your most-hated high school teacher often told you, you have to buckle down and learn the content of a subject--facts, concepts and trends--before the maxims of critical thinking taught in these feverishly-marketed courses will do you much good. The processes ...

Performance Improvement and ePerformance
Tony Karrer recently did a post on his blog regarding ePerformance. He also has a few good links to Learning Circuits articles on the topic, including this one that serves as a primer. This is a topic that I've written about several times on this blog, and I will continue to emphasize its importance on the community.I was asked the other day what the real difference was between performance improvement and training, because after all "isn't the goal of training to improve performance?" I answered, 'yes'...however, not all performance can be improved with training. I started back at the ...

As a reader of this blog you are a witness if not an active participant in the dramatic changes that we have seen over the last few years as a result of web 2.0 technologies. The big question: What are your predictions for learning in 2008
In addressing this month's question on the Learning Circuits Blog, I was tempted by an observation made by Stephen Downes in his review of last year's eLearn Magazine predictions: ... there are two major types of predictions: one, which identifies a current trend, and says it will continue; and the other, that identifies something novel or unexpected. It seems clear that the former predictions are easy and safe and not especially useful. The latter, while not as safe, were much more useful to people. Guarded because, like Oscar Wilde, I know I can resist anything except temptation, ...

Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies (+ a little venting)
I've been able to spend more time digesting the resources and information on the Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies (see my previous post on Top Ten Lists). This is truely an excellent resource for new and seasoned learning design and performance improvement professionals. Jane Hart provides a great resource that I find myself returning to frequently. Some of the valuable information that I've found include:Directory of Learning Tools - Range from traditional development tools to collaboration and information sharing tools. I can say very confidently that more people read Tony Karrer's blog than this blog, but for anyone who hasn't seen Tony's blog yet, he has a great post on ROI and Metrics in eLearning. He is conducting research for an upcoming article on ROI and Metrics. It's a very hot topic and should be worth the read.

Research for Web 2.0
Tony Karrer has an interesting post (eLearning Technology: Thomas Davenport and Blogging - He is Wrong!) on a book he is reading. Based solely on the paragraph Tony posted, I would agree that Davenport is being inconsistent for he claims that the benefits of blogging have not been measured, but then claims that blogging has decreased productivity without providing a basis for his claims. This search for empirical data led me to do a few quick searches on Google Scholar with no concrete studies done (a few case studies, interviews, etc.). I would love to hear of any quantitative (or more ...
