More Net Gen Nonsense
Tuesday, December 2, 2008
Mark Bullen writes an important blog - netgen nonsense - that I encourage educators to follow. He takes a critical look at evidence (or lack of it) that supports the concept of net generation learners. His blog title is obviously intended to be controversial, but his views are well considered. His main message: evidence to date does not support broad ... patience for passive and linear forms of learning. Students use a limited range of technologies for formal and informal learning. These are mainly established ICTs - institutional VLE, Google and Wikipedia and mobile phones. Students ...

Beyond the course
Monday, December 1, 2008
In the process of thinking through how to support informal learning, I was reminded of a diagram I created several years ago. I started from an approach based upon philosophy that talked about acting in the world: you act in the world when you can, and when you have a breakdown you need to solve it, so you repair, and then reflect and learn so you can ... for me is that this provides a strong justification for using social networks in learning: wikis can be places where ... expertise, blogs may support people in their problem-solving as well, serving as a way to share questions and ...

Who knows of "C"-level executives that have blogs?
Because NBC kind of failed to do it (see previous post), I'm compiling my own list - I would LOVE your help! (I've stolen a few of these from Marketing Nirvana's past lists but would like to not only update that but broaden it to include more the learning/training field)

Blog of the Week - Learning Technologies
Well, just over six months in, and I'm still here, albeit with a backlog of ideas/thoughts that really should be up here by now. So it's nice to find that this blog was selected as a Blog of the Week by the Learning Technologies team.
A useful little motivator to step things up a little.

It's all getting a bit serious

One of the good things about blogs is that they attract debate and you can learn a lot from differing opinions. Birds of a feather
... those blogs which are likely to support our own view of the world? Blogging a Conference
I just saw a blog that appears to have been created solely as a means to interact, capture thoughts and ideas during the Brandon Hall Innovations conference. It's a great way for folks not at the conference to have a sense of what's going on there. And, I bet it is a fantastic learning and networking experience for the blogger. Kudos to the BH folks for encouraging this even if there were issues .

Learning About eLearning: Browse My Stuff
Tony Karrer has just rebranded and launched eLearning Learning . It's kind of like Technorati, but community focused around the singular topic of eLearning. I've added a widget to my blog's sidebar that lets you browse my stuff (it does the tagging for me, so I don't have to). If you click on a topic you'll go to the hub, where you can access posts by others on the same topic. Let me (and Tony) know what you think!

Blog Action Day 2008: My experience with poverty
Today is Blog Action Day , and the topic is fighting poverty. One of my colleagues at EMC has already posted his Blog Action post (go see Steve Todd’s post).

I’ve been busy at work helping build a new external-facing community (as soon as it is live I’ll talk more about that!). Between that work, my grad school class ... neglect my blog.
Who knows, maybe things will change and I’ll have lots of free time soon. If not, I’m ...

TrainingDay Post: Combine Simple Games and Information
This week over at TrainingDay blog , my post is titled Combine Simple Games and Information . Why not create distracting "casual games" that also educate customers or employees. Why do all the learning games have to be "serious." Let's make learning games fun and learning more "accidental" than forced. Perhaps less focus on Immersive Learning Simulations and more focus on fun and games. Fun is motivational and engaging. Also, thanks to Bart at Virtual Learning Worlds for leading me to the game I posted about on TrainingDay. __ Recommended Games and Gadgets Recommended ...

A Chaotic Theory of Learning Design
I read Tom Haskins' post on Blogs Defy Categorization . As usual, he got me thinking: What if blog postings are emergent outcomes? What if we don't make blogs happen, they simply happen to us and through us? What if our blogs are really out of our control? What if blogs are co-created with every other blogger interdependently? What if the boundaries between blogs are illusions? What if blog postings come about synergistically: by the countless interaction effects between all the blogs we subscribe to and read (and blogs that link to those). What if blogs are fallout (side ...
