• IABTI Conference

My colleagues and I recently submitted a paper/presentation for the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI) Conference. This was their annual training and technology conference. We presented on some of the training programs we are working on, and we also gave a primer on trends in the learning field. One of the more remarkable things was a simple question asked by my colleague. Presenting to a room of about 100 people, she asked who had ... . I'm not saying that learning conferences are bad...far from it. It's just that sometimes we suffer from ...

  • Workshop Exercise Design - Help Needed

I've just posted Identify Knowledge Work Tasks - Workshop Exercise which describes a workshop exercise that I'm considering using in several different workshops. I feel like it makes a lot of the discussion more concrete.I'm really hoping that folks will help me out by:a. telling me what they would say if they were in the workshop andb. giving me thoughts on the exercise itself. The last time I posted something like this it was a HUGE help and I significantly redesigned the exercise which probably saved me a lot of grief. See comments in Conference Session Breakout - which convinced me ...

  • OMG...There are spies everywhere sabotaging our organizations!!

OK at least now we have an explanation for what has been going on in all of organizations. We have thoroughly been infiltrated by spies who have read and are following this manual. Seriously. This is a manual from 1944 that taught spies how to sabotage everything from railways to organizations. It came to light as part of a presentation at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference on Intellipedia.  Wanna hear the crazy part? I have excerpted the portion of the manual below that explains how to disrupt and destroy the internal workings of organizations. Tell me that many of these don't read ...

  • Learning and Technology Conferences

This happens to me every few months: I’ll hear about a great conference that took place for learning and technology professionals just a few days after it occurred. Bummer. So I wanted to open up this week’s post to get your input (please!). What learning and technology conferences have you attended, and would you recommend them? I’ll go first: I made it to the Training Magazine 2006 conference and thought it was great. They had fantastic keynote speakers ... conferences (Annual Gathering 2007 and 2008 and DevLearn 2007). These have been my favorites, especially in terms ...

  • Objection #10: Wasting Time

Objection #10 stems from the “SOCIAL” aspect of social learning.  In fact, in one conference session I gave one attendee said that they would never mention the word ’social’ for fear that those who have an influence on the decision might get the wrong idea.  Understood.  “The employees will spend hours writing a blog and put of actually getting things done.  Their productivity will go down.” Answer: I believe I have told this story before, but I am going to again.  A friend of mine, Josh Bancroft, (who created the famed Intelpedia for Intel) and I ...

  • ScreenFlow Wins Two Apple Design Awards

I mentioned the release of ScreenFlow back in February, and this app is getting some high-profile (and well-deserved) recognition by way of two Apple Design Awards from the 2008 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC): Best OS X Graphics and Media Application and Best OS X Application. With the high level of quality of OS X applications in general, winning an Apple Design Award is no mean feat. Winning two? Epic! Nice work, Vara Software. Sorry Windows users, this one is Mac-only. But the time has never been better (VMWare Fusion) to jump into the Mac end of the pool. Come on in, ...

Here is what I fear will not happen. The old, tired, damaging curriculum of ISD which is built on some post-WW II factory production model and is decidedly NOT a design process/model, will continue to be dominant and will continue to be used to crank out more graduates who will dutifully move out into the public and private sectors and who will dutifully pick up where their peers have left off, worrying about templates and screen captures and Likert scales and nothing important will change ...

I had to race out of the conference Thursday afternoon since I was headed out of town that evening. The delay (and lack of electricity at my location) gave me a chance to reflect a bit on the week. The line between librarians and instructional designers continues to fade.My early gut instinct that the more ... .--------------------------------------I'm finding the technology curve alive and well. • Topic Diversity

Through the post on Conference Balance an in thinking about the keynotes at ASTD that I attended (ASTD Keynote - Malcolm Gladwell, Dysfunctional Teams), I realized that one of the reasons that I like going to conferences is it forces me (sometimes slowly and painfully) to get exposed to a diversity of topics. Through my PWLE methods (reading blogs, etc.) I would not have run across the concepts in Dysfunctional Teams. This was a good topic to go through and think about - and to have captured in my blog. But, if I'm suggesting that conferences should head towards participation and ...

I had a chance to chat briefly with Anders Gronstadt after the Sid Meier keynote and asked him what his more interesting projects were. He's been doing a lot with podcasting and creating podcasting tutorials (something that excited my colleague who has joined me for the conference). But he also said that some of the most interesting stuff in Second Life is the New Employee orientation. So yesterday at the Innovations in e-Learning Conference was kind of interesting. Just nursing my Hypographia- Happy to see that Mark O and Brigadier General Skip Hanson found each other. That's the cool thing about going to conferences - you see something at a previous conference that may help someone you are talking to at another conference. If both people are in the same place (or in this instance, working for the same umbrella organization) you can then help connect them. It's a neat process. - Apparently, I left yesterday's conference just in time. I only ran into 3 dark traffic lights and had to do a minor detour to my old stomping grounds in Alexandria to ...
