eLearning 2.0 -> Informal Learning -> learning 2.0 -> web 2.0
Brent Schlenker writes, "... that 80% to 90% of learning occurs informally outside of the classroom. This should be shocking enough to force some sort of change in e-Learning design, but it hasn't ... at least not yet in any significant way."
Schlenker goes on to tie elearning 2.0 to informal learning to learning 2.0 to web 2.0, which is based on consuming content, creating content, and collaborating with others. This leads to the catchy phase of "rip, mix, and feed" (consume, create, and share).
So now we are left with the impression that we are spending all of our resources on ...

RSS: The New Learning Pipeline - Online Forum Session, Sept. 18th
I will be giving a session during next month's Online Forum: Implementing e-Learning 2.0 Technologies. My session is titled RSS: The New Learning Pipeline. Clear your calendar for the 18th and 19th of September. Its going to be fun!!!I believe RSS technology is the most misunderstood of all the technologies in a Web2.0 world. While many may never need to know what it is, as an e-Learning designer/developer/manager it is critical that you understand how it works and how it impacts your job...and your life.I love presenting this session because it gives a chance to focus heavily on ...

Is Instructional Designer the Right Title?
Via a post I found through Workplace Learning Today, Rob Wilkins asked whether “instructional designer” is ... . I agree with at least some of what he’s saying; instructional designer does carry some connotations of formal, instructor-led learning.
Wilkins focuses on the “designer” part of the title in his post. He says that designer ... I quite agree.
To me, if there’s an issue with the title “instructional designer,” it’s with the instructional part rather than the designer half. “Instructional” is the word to me that implies ...

Ruminations of a Learning Professional: Call a Spade a Shovel - but make sure you describe!
One learning professional asks if the title “instructional designer” is perhaps not the most accurate description for what we do, especially with learning 2.0 and increases in learner control.
tags: instructionaldesign, career, web2.0, learning2.0
Is the term Instructional Designer a dead description, title, category or classification?
In light of web or learning 2.0, there are theories that in fact a better name would be an information and instruction architect.

Update - Supporting New Managers
Back in March 2007, in response to that month's Big Question, I told a story about one of my favorite bosses - Rick Yeatman - and the things he did that made him a great manager.I received an e-mail from him today thanking me for the post.Apparently, a friend of his had found this blog, read the post and notified him.He found my work e-mail and dropped me a line. He's happily working at the Savannah College of Art and Design - where he doesn't have to fight with the football team for money.Such is the power of Web 2.0 technologies. And Rick - you don't have to thank me for a thing.

An interview with Cathy Moore
I met Cathy Moore when I was in Indianapolis last year, having followed her blog Making Change - ideas for lively elearning since its inception. Cathy's blog is aimed fairly and squarely at instructional designers, encouraging them to 'dump the drone' and create more lively, powerful e-learning. Cathy's posts are beautifully written, imaginative and nicely presented, which makes me believe she probably does a pretty expert job as a designer. So, Cathy volunteered to be the subject of my third Webcam Interview, which means this probably constitutes a series. Expect to see number four, ...

The Business Value of Web 2.0 Learning Tools
Jay Cross cracks me up (in a good way). When he’s not sharing gorgeous travel photos (including pictures of some of the most unique food you’ll ever see), he comes up with gems related to informal learning and educational technology. One of his latest offerings is a chart that outlines a variety of Web 2.0 tools, including a brief description of their business value. This is great! I appreciate that Jay is able to succinctly articulate their business value, especially because many people still don’t take these tools seriously.

Innovating in the Corporate Environment
One challenge for many large companies is ... how does one encourage innovation and creativity in corporate environments which often push employees to make "safe" decisions? After all, isn't product feature creep the easiest way to enhance what one already knows? Our customers always want more enhancements to existing products, or so we think! This kind of engineering design often leads to "bloatware". In the software arena, take a look at the Yahoo portal or the MS Office suite of products. Compare and contrast these examples to the Google user interface. I ...

...and we're back!
So I think the eLearning 2.0 seminar that Brent Schlenker and I did in Chicago went off pretty well. We had like 35-40 people in the room, everyone stayed really engaged and Brent and I got some great feedback on how to do this presentation better next time.
I'm thinking that I really want to develop some use cases (Developer, Learner, Designer, Manager) and use those as a schema for relating eLearning 2.0 activities to the enterprise. Sound good? Any done this ... iPhone is awful..no ability to favorite or reply...bad design, bad.

No time for errors
It's great to welcome one of close work colleagues entering the edublogosphere, particularly one with so much unique expertise to share, and that's Chris Brannigan of Caspian Learning. Chris is one of a rare breed of designers specialising in 3D worlds for education and training, with the advantage of a sound theoretical understanding of learning and an abundance of interesting opinions. Chris' first post, Failing to Win!, makes the point that most education and training programmes are designed to minimise the chance of the student making errors; yet without the opportunity to ...

Do your webinars stink?
I certainly hope not! I like to think that readers of eLearning Weekly are far superior to the average webinar practitioner. You’re the brightest of the eLearning field. We hold webinars where people are engaged while learning. Right? Right.
Well, just in case you need a refresher, I’ve got a good resource for you: In a recent article in CLO Magazine, Allison Rossett, Antonia Chan and Colleen Cunningham take an honest look at webinars and reveal what works and what doesn’t. The article, What Stinks About Webinars?, presents several great examples where webinars stand up - ...
