Cutting the pie
As a reader of this blog you are a witness if not an active participant in the dramatic changes that we have seen over the last few years as a result of web 2.0 technologies. Value of Predictions
I've been reading a few posts on 2008 predictions. Stephen Downes wrote a post that critiqued and graded several of the 2007 predictions. It was an interesting read, but I found myself agreeing with some of the concerns Karl Kapp raised about the whole grading activity...especially the portion of grading your own prediction. Stephen gave himself an A-; however, his "prediction" on the trend of video continuing in popularity is very much of the "more of the same" prediction that he criticizes other people for. Also, since the personal learning environment didn't happen (which he said it ...

USCG Human Performance Technology (HPT) Workshop
E-Learning Trends" session by Rich Arnold from Unitech (pretty cool website too if you get a chance to check it out). I always enjoy attending the e-learning trends sessions just to see if everyone is "trending" in the same direction. Rich was a great speaker and a lot of his trends were right on target. He also noted that, in a sense, there are no e-learning trends. In fact, e-learning is a mechanism; not a panacea. E-learning crosses performance improvement, education, and training. If you are curious, his top ten trends (in no specific order, except for #1) are:1. Technology used ...

Resurgence of Media vs. Method Debate
It seems like with the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies, there has been a resurgence of the Media/Method debate. Just a quick recap of the debate to catch-up those unfamiliar with the debate...In the 1980's and 1990's, Richard Clark and Robert Kozma wrote a series of papers debating whether or not media influences learning. Clark posited that media does not influence learning under any conditions, and Kozma was claiming that media does influence learning as an active process (although some contest that Kozma was actually arguing a different hypothesis).I've come across three items in ...

First Post
At the recent ASTD conference in Atlanta, I attended Tony Karrer's presentation on "eLearning 2.0". He discussed several technologies I had heard about, but have not had time (due to dissertation writing) to interact with. More importantly, he challenged everyone in the audience to become an active blogger...not necessarily for the benefit of others, but for their own continual learning and development. I greatly appreciated Tony's presentation and this blog is evidence that I have accepted Tony's challenge. In a way, doctoral programs forces one to continually read and stay on top of ...
