2 Weeks Later - Things Forgotten
My co-workers have been amazed by some of the stuff people have forgotten from the training. "I can't believe they forgot that the little blue i takes you to the patient demographics. That was there in the last version!" "I know you trained them on verifying results....TWICE!" "Authorizing Orders is easy - why can't they figure it out!" What I learned: people are only going to remember the information that is needed immediately. For the docs - the dominant concern ... amazed that after the guerilla training we did anyone remembered anything.

Imagination Training
Following my previous post it's amusing to see Science Daily report that a lack of imagination in older adults is linked to declining memory function.
A new Harvard University study reveals that the ability of older adults to form imaginary scenarios is linked to their ability to recall detailed memories.
According to the study, episodic memory, which represents our personal memories of ...

Challenges with "Training"
... alone. The issue is concerning the word "training" in a title of a group or individual's position. The group I support has the word "training" in the title, but I have been (and will continue) to emphasize that our emphasis is on performance improvement...if training happens to be one of the interventions, then so be it. Regardless, the title of containing the word "training" is not likely to change. For one, many see training as something tangible. For others, the word training is comfortable and accepted in the U.S. Government to mean many different things. Human performance technology ...

Inaccurate claims of brain training benefits

Progress on Management Training Program
Months and Months ago I mentioned how I am starting my first larger scale eLearning project in a posting titled Manager Training Program . I am now knee deep in the project and learning a lot along the way. I designed and developed a prototype for the first course and it is under review now. I am expecting that there may be some barriers I have to overcome due to the fact that this is a big change in how we facilitate training programs, and nobody likes change. Due to budgetary restrictions I am limited to Power Point in combination with a PPT to Flash Converter as my authoring ...

SL Question - How do you start sending staff into Second Life for training?
I certainly haven't got all the Second Life lingo yet, but I'll try to pose my question here anyway. I was looking at a virtual conference in Second Life coming up that had some health care topics involved. Thinking about this I thought neat, I could register and give it a try to see what was covered and how they even do a conference in SL . I then wondered though, if I wanted to create/send coworkers into SL for a virtual experience how would that be done. I realize it would take some time to get land and create my area (Sim? is that right?), but then what. Would you just tell your ...

How am I Gonna Use This?
Karl Kapp has an interesting post on teaching software to others . The one key being drilled into me by my end-users: Context. Real-world examples of how they are actually going to USE this thing. Most of the folks I teach are looking for the fastest way to accomplish a particular task. That gets lost in most software training because we get so focused ... features are tangible and quantitative. The type of evaluation I (still!) see in this type of training: A, B, C, or D - which ... thing gets done, so much the better. So a large chunk of my face-to-face training still consists of asking questions.

One Letter of ADDIE
Christy Tucker asks whether Instructional Designers NEED Technology skills . (emphasis mine) Read the comments and conversation carefully in her post. Quite eye-opening. ________________________________________________________________________ I occasionally envy those folks whose world is so compartmentalized. Realistically, I'm probably too much of a control freak to thrive in that situation. That said - whenever I start dreaming of a work life of ...

Certifiably Trained
New article from Training magazine: Certifiably Trained
Every company knowsâ€"or should knowâ€"that its human capital really is capital. Employees generate revenue when they deliver services properly or information correctly. Training is the obvious strategy that most companies employ to make sure that happens, but sometimes that's just not good enough.
Certification is a process of separating those who are fully trained and competent from those who are not. It often consists of a set course of training, followed by a test or performance requirement. Employees who pass are ...
