  • Facebook (for example) versus an LMS/LCMS: Need some technical help...
OK...so help me out here....someone smarter than me (big number) help me understand the difference in architectural requirements and transactions that go on in say a social network like facebook with millions of users, probably hundreds of thousands of concurrent users, all executing millions of transactions from chat to photo uploads to quiz taking...with those of an LMS or an LCMS. I really want to understand issues around scaling, etc.  Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

  • Placebo effect - confidence in learning
I've been thinking about a short commentary by Simon Caulkin in the The Observer last weekend on the power of the placebo effect in the business world. He picked out an interesting example which relates to the world of training and learning: Consider, for example, the experiment in an Israeli army boot camp recounted in Bob Sutton's quirky book Weird Ideas That Work. Incoming recruits ...

  • Social Media...outside, inside, upside down
An excellent post from Leigh Blackall at Learn Online , which includes a break down of the three well- established learning theories (which, as we know, inform our instructional design), is built around the premise that social media is a product of social constructivism yet is being (mis)adopted into behaviorist practices. He argues that social media cannot be used inside behaviorist media like the LMS or LCMS). But he’s not saying we should abandon these ... media a product of social constructivism? • Learning Object Tools
A reader from another country has asked me about Learning Object Tools. I asked him to clarify what they meant and the response was: Learning Object Tools are those that allow you to create, edit and manage learning objects. There is also a bit of language barrier. I pointed them at the Wikipedia article - Learning Object . It cites quite a few repositories and briefly mentions " Burrokeet is an Open Source Software tool that assists in the creation of Learning Objects from existing content. " This is something I'm not familiar with. I also suggested looking at LCMS products.

  • Convincing the Boss - The introduction
I am a very lucky woman. I have a boss who likes technology, encourages me to experiment, and serves as a teacher and supporter (rather than a dictator). He was willing to spend significant $$$$ for a high-end learning management system. Talking around eLearnDevCon 2006, however, the only system I heard ANY excitement about was Moodle. Whenever I asked about other LMS or LCMS, I heard implementation horror stories. I already deal with one unwieldy enterprise system. Last thing I (or the rest of the IT department) wanted to do was deal with another. Moodle impressed me four ways: 1) ...
