E-Learning for Newbies
ASTD’s Learning Circuits Blog has a monthly ‘Big Question.” This month it’s:
I’m interested in [the field of] eLearning. What should I do first?
I’m responding to this question from the perspective of a person looking to get a job in the field of e-learning vs. a person who knows little about the term.
I think one place ... to e-learning should focus on:
history, trends, and direction (history, evolution, impact of technology, etc.) Here is a ... ;101″ webinar with Learn.com which should provide an overview. I also wrote elearning 101 which provides ...

Critical Thinking, Course Navigation, & Design
The Thinking Behind Critical Thinking Courses - Washington Post
Critical thinking is not a skill like riding a bike or diagramming a sentence that, once learned, can be applied in many situations. Instead, as your most-hated high school teacher often told you, you have to buckle down and learn the content of a subject--facts, concepts and trends--before the maxims of critical thinking taught in these feverishly-marketed courses will do you much good. The processes of ... Navigation Will Create Better Learning - The Rapid eLearning Blog

How do you keep up with all the new trends/tools?
In speaking with a recently acquired colleague (I think I'm going to start elearning trading cards) we were discussing how difficult for us "experts" (if we can loosely call ourselves that) it is to keep up with all the new web tools, elearning trends, latest software, best techniques, etc.I know for myself I'm constantly trying to keep up-to-date on what is the latest and greatest, but it is all coming so fast it's hard to keep up with. Recently someone on Twitter I follow ... two colleagues have a really good handle on some new trend and I let them run with it, but go to them for advice about ...

IABTI Conference
My colleagues and I recently submitted a paper/presentation for the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI) Conference. This was their annual training and technology conference. We presented on some of the training programs we are working on, and we also gave a primer on trends in the learning field. One of the more remarkable things was a simple question asked by my colleague. Presenting to a room of about 100 people, she asked who had heard of "Web 2.0". Guess how many people raised their hands? 2. I think we picked the right audience to give ...

Performance Improvement and ePerformance
Tony Karrer recently did a post on his blog regarding ePerformance. He also has a few good links to Learning Circuits articles on the topic, including this one that serves as a primer. This is a topic that I've written about several times on this blog, and I will continue to emphasize its importance on the community.I was asked the other day what the real difference was between performance improvement and training, because after all "isn't the goal of training to improve performance?" I answered, 'yes'...however, not all performance can be improved with training. I started back at the basis ...

Steady Stream of Virtual Worlds
The past week (and upcoming two days) seems to be filled with a steady stream of information on virtual worlds. First, I attended the Corporate Advisory Council at Bloomsburg University. Although "virtual worlds" was not the emphasis for this Spring's RFP (it actually was for last year's), Karl Kapp always gives out nice, short, little white papers on a topic of interest. This year, the white paper was called "Real World Instructional Design for Virtual Learning". He gives a brief overview of virtual worlds (a.k.a. metaverses), and then discusses advantages and disadvantages of different ...

Catch-up
I've been holed up for the past several days (and nights) reviewing over 200 proposals. I'm a little over half way through, but needed to take a mental break before embarking on more reviews tomorrow. One thing became abundantly clear as I was reading. There is still so much work that needs to be done in the model, simulation, and gaming field specifically and e-Learning field in general. In a way, I guess that should be encouraging since it provides a degree of job security. However, there are many disjointed efforts going on and despite recent attempts to standardize one or more domain ( ...
