2 Weeks Later - Things Forgotten
My co-workers have been amazed by some of the stuff people have forgotten from the training. "I can't believe they forgot that the little blue i takes you to the patient demographics. That was there in the last version!" "I know you trained them on verifying results....TWICE!" "Authorizing Orders is easy - why can't they figure it out!" What I learned: people are only going to remember the information that is needed immediately. For the docs - the dominant concern ... amazed that after the guerilla training we did anyone remembered anything.

Blended learning supports Xerox rollout

Inaccurate claims of brain training benefits
I've been an avid supporter of Nintendo for the past two years or so, for their design prowess and dramatic success in widening the appeal of gaming. Indeed they're redefining recreational digital fun to include - shock - the learning of new skills. Brain Training in particular has been a left field success. I bought the game when it first launched in the US back in 2006 and was intrigued by ...

Dealing with Tough Times
With the recent dramatic changes in the US and global economies, it’s natural for many of us in the learning / training industry to start looking over our shoulders. As we know, training departments are too often seen as one of the first places where organizations can "trim the fat." It’s ironic, really; we generally see ourselves as the ones that can help the organization tighten up to run more efficiently and effectively, especially in times like these.
Harold Jarche wrote an excellent blog post yesterday called "Opportunities in difficult times ." ...

Thoughts on Blended Learning
Clive Shepherd has three great posts about blended learning over on his blog (see the links at the bottom of this post). Clive gives us a well-needed closer examination of how we define and prescribe blended learning. In the past, I remember using the term and concept to help get management away from the idea of only using instructor-led training. This at least opened their eyes to consider using online courses, virtual classroom training, etc. Now I feel like too many people blindly say, “You should create a blended learning solution…” but they can’t describe ...

Progress on Management Training Program
Months and Months ago I mentioned how I am starting my first larger scale eLearning project in a posting titled Manager Training Program . I am now knee deep in the project and learning a lot along the way. I designed and developed a prototype for the first course and it is under review now. I am expecting that there may be some barriers I have to overcome due to the fact that this is a big change in how we facilitate training programs, and nobody likes change. Due to budgetary restrictions I am limited to Power Point in combination with a PPT to Flash Converter as my authoring ...

Learning your limits...50degree water for 60mins
This weekend is busy with tons of sports and activities for the Schlenker family. So, I'll start in order starting with Saturday morning. My wife and 9 year old daughter are training with 50 other kids (and adults) to swim from Alcatraz to SanFrancisco. Saturday morning was their second "cold water" training swim. Podcast Fast with GCast
Yes, that’s probably the cheesiest title I’ve ever used, I know… But I recently found out about GCast , a free service that lets you record messages using your phone and then converts them to a podcast. Sure, this is kind of similar to Jott , but I like the simplicity of GCast. It does one thing, and it does it well.
Here’s how it works: Once you set up an account (again, it’s free), you can dial into a 1-888… number, enter your PIN, and record a voice message. After hanging up, your message is immediately available as a podcast online. People can ...

Learning is a health issue
I'm playing a bit of catch up after a particularly busy month - although the way things are looking that'll be the pattern for the foreseeable future. Learning vs. Training
The cliche is that training is not important, learning is. OK. For me, that is skunk works ... deployment of specific (and hopefully business critical) learning objectives. If training has fallen as a word, so be it ... thing. eLearning / mLearning Domain Names For Sale
I used to go out and buy domain names whenever I had an idea for a start-up or a new project. Over time, I’ve accumulated several decent domain names, but I haven’t followed through with all of my ideas… So I thought I’d post all of them here. Please leave a comment on this post if you’re interested in making an offer for any of these. I’ve highlighted the ones that I think have the most potential. (I hope this doesn’t come across as slimy; my goal isn’t to gouge people. I’d rather see these names be put to good use.)

The Perfect Learning Management System (LMS)
I often find myself daydreaming when dealing with LMS problems. I say to myself, "If I built an LMS, it would…….." Ah, if only it were that easy. This line of thinking leads me to these questions: How would you design your perfect LMS? What features would you include (or exclude)? How would it differ from current LMS products on the market?
I’ll start this off, but I really would love to hear your thoughts. Who knows, maybe (if we’re lucky) some LMS vendors are listening!
My perfect LMS would…
