Redefining Education for the 21st Century?
... sights on the one institution/enterprise function that has managed to emerge unscathed from the application of technology: Education. So here I sit in the nexus. In one corner, a set of technologies that are fundamentally transforming how we live work and play and, in the other, an institution (i.e. University or K-12 School) and or enterprise function (i.e. Learning Function) that has largely deployed technology not to transform how we facilitate learning but simply to automate how we teach ...

In the Middle of the Curve - Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - CommentsEvenings alone
I was reading in Management Today magazine about a new website called SkyLounge.com, which connects business travellers who want to meet up with like-minded souls when stuck in a strange town on their own with nothing to do in the evenings. Not a bad idea if you simply have to talk to people non-stop in every waking hour, but I must confess I enjoy the rare chance for some time to myself. Where I most miss company is if I'm somewhere nice and want to take a look at the sights. I've never lived alone or travelled alone voluntarily, so I'm simply not acclimatised to solo tourism.

A Positive Implementation Lesson
Last Friday, we managed to get the problem project out the door.18 hours early. The formal go-live came and went with little fanfare. The first weekend was reasonably quiet. 4000 new users. 40 help desk calls. Only 2 calls having to do with the system not working correctly. The other 38 were of the "how do I" variety or concerned other systems interfaced with the new application. All reasonably small problems. The Director posited that the uneventfulness of the implementation was a result of the very painful meetings. I noticed that the last 2 weeks before the go-live people stopped ...
