Networks of Everything
Tuesday, December 2, 2008
Apparently, by 2017 , personal networks will consist of over 1000 devices. I’m not sure how they came up with that number, but it seems realistic. Most of us already deal with hundreds of devices on a daily basis. They’re not all networked yet…but they will be. The key to effective functioning with these multiple devices will be in how they are connected and in how we can use that connectedness in making decisions. Obviously, we need something more than just tying these devices together. We need new approach to managing the overwhelming information they will produce.

Extending elearning?
Sunday, November 30, 2008
A contact asked me what I saw as the link between Sharepoint and elearning, and I started to give my standard answer about portals fitting in with the whole performance ecosystem. Last I played with Sharepoint, it seemed like a portal solution; a place to deposit files. Obvious extensions I would infer from social networking would include wrapping ... Sharepoint features, and went to look at Microsoft’s page. They tout collaboration, content management, and search as well as portals. This sounds like they’re beginning to incorporate real eCommunity/social networking ...

LMS widgets and user ratings
At the eLearning Network showcase event in July, I attended an interesting presentation on the use of learning communities made by Carole Bower of Futuremedia . Two aspects of the 'Performance Zone' site that Futuremedia created for private health care provider BUPA particularly caught my attention: LMS widgets : The site provides each user with a personalised home page that can be customised with all sorts of widgets, including RSS feeds, etc. These widgets draw heavily from the learning management system, but do not require the user to log into the LMS. The widgets allow ...

Using My IT Buddy
I received an excellent example of the value of IT friends within an organization. Yesterday, I talked to one of the members of our network team.
