I/ITSEC Day 3
I'm currently sitting at the Orlando airport getting ready to head back home from a great I/ITSEC conference. Today was spent wrapping up on the expo floor. Although I always wish that I had more time to spend with some of the vendors, I did manage to cover the entire explo floor. I attended one paper session on experiential learning. Ironically, the presenter was a colleague I use to work with at the National Defense University while I was at CTC. It wasn't planned ... years of attendence), I've realized how small the simulation and game community is. Probably the reason I did not get ...

Authoring Simulation Genres: Interactive Spreadsheets
One well-understood simulation genre is interactive spreadsheets . Interactive spreadsheets focus on abstract business school issues such as supply chain management, product lifecycle, accounting, and general cross-functional business acumen. Students allocate finite resources along competing categories at successive turn-based fixed intervals, and each time they watch their results play out on dense graphs and charts. This is often done in a multi-player or team-based environment and often with facilitators. The subtlety, unpredictability, and variability make them appropriate for training ...

Authoring Simulation Genres: Branching Stories
One well-understood simulation genre is branching stories . In branching stories, students make multiple-choice decisions along an ongoing sequence of events around what to say to another person in a given situation. The decisions impact the evolution of the story, ultimately terminating in either successful or unsuccessful outcomes. Their ease of use, ease of deployment, and content style make them highly appropriate for entry-level salespeople, call center representatives, freshmen, customer-facing retail positions, and entry-level managers. Any high-turnover position should be trained ...

Hello Captivate!
My Adobe creative suite and Captivate arrived and I have already dove into a project in Captivate. While I was waiting for the software to arrive, I designed and storyboarded a soft skill scenario simulation for management training courses that I am working on. Now I am knee deep in developing it in Captivate and I am kicking myself for not pushing harder for this purchase a year ago. Now I would love to go back and re do several of the eLearning courses I developed using Power Point and a Flash converter. Unfortunately I have too many projects on my to do list to spend the ...

Thoughts on Blended Learning
Clive Shepherd has three great posts about blended learning over on his blog (see the links at the bottom of this post). Clive gives us a well-needed closer examination of how we define and prescribe blended learning. The Only Training Metric that Matters
There is only one training metric that matters: the person responsible for the training program gets promoted. Any other metric, be it smilesheets or increased organizational productivity, or stock price, is only ammunition. Now, clearly we need to tap into pure research. We need to pilot. Your clients, be they sales teams or management, live in a ... as simulation vendor. In either case, I don't want the email from someone who says, "You get it. I get it. Simulations ...
