I’ve spent the last 15 hours in the company of geeks. Not just any geeks. Rather, these are the friends and followers of Chris Pirillo and his beautiful appendage Ponzi Pirillo. What were Chris and Ponzi thinking? Picture an awful spot for social networking. Let’s see: loud music ... networking?

A Reflection of Transitions
Image via Wikipedia
Yesterday was my first official day (this year) back in the school world. We were asked to introduce ourselves. I mentioned that I was first hired on as a Training Manager.
A lot has happened in this time. My focus has changed dramatically. My day-to-day concerns are now centered around implementing, maintaining and strategizing around social learning / network / media initiatives with a side plate of formal training. I am about to give a ... this thought: We can’t be so caught up in the new social learning / network / media that we neglect or ...

On my cloud, baby
A cloud is normally visible right? It seems then that the â¬Scloudâ¬ý metaphor of â¬Scloud computingâ¬ý is flawed although I understand that it is based on the typical computer network diagram.
As I understand the term, cloud computing is used to describe the use of a scalable platform, like external web-based Google Apps, for computing services vs. installation and management of software and hardware. One common analogy I like is the use of public utilities to secure services where you canâ¬"t see the infrastructure.
John Iscream raises his concern about cloud computing and security.

A job like mine
I fell in love. I foresaw a convergence of learning and networks that would change the world,” says Cross. His firm, along with most of the training community, had a different vision: interactive multimedia CD-ROM. Cross left that company to found Internet Time Group. As he developed his concept of web-enabled learning, he posted his findings on the internet. There weren’t many takers until CBT Systems, the largest and oldest provider of IT training CDs, became interested in online delivery ...

Agile e-learning
Back in June, I posted about the Three Tiers in the Content Pyramid, a model I borrowed from Nick Shackleton-Jones of the BBC. The pyramid shows how high-end e-content can integrate with rapid content and user-generated content within an overall strategy working from both the bottom up and the top down: At the eLearning Network's July Showcase, a presentation I attended by Nicola Foster of Information Transfer, made me question whether the boundaries between the three tiers of the pyramid are all that distinct. Nicola's proposition was that, while rapid content development had ...

The treatment matrix
Perhaps the most enjoyable session I attended at the eLearning Network's July showcase event was presented by Richard Middleton of Academy Internet. The title of the session was 'Fun & games - are they really necessary?', although a more accurate description would probably have been 'Fun & games - when are they necessary?' Richard argued that, in designing self-study e-learning, the amount of effort you should put into elaborate forms of interactivity (scenarios, sims, games) or rich media content (audio, video, 3D, animation) should depend on two factors: "The greater ...

Guide on the Side or Expert Expediter
Christine Martell’s post on ASTD today concerns how we, as training natives, might need to adapt to use social learning. She references Ray Jimenez’s post expressing similar concerns. Christine asks,
What do we do when content is generated by the users? Ray suggests we become trainer-facilitator-network weavers. Is our role shifting to be more of a guide? Creating rich resource pools which learners can dip into as needed?
I'm beginning to understand more why Ray is agonizing over social learning. Not only are we being asked to help others make fundamental changes in how ...

LMS widgets and user ratings
At the eLearning Network showcase event in July, I attended an interesting presentation on the use of learning communities made by Carole Bower of Futuremedia. Two aspects of the 'Performance Zone' site that Futuremedia created for private health care provider BUPA particularly caught my attention: LMS widgets: The site provides each user with a personalised home page that can be customised with all sorts of widgets, including RSS feeds, etc. These widgets draw heavily from the learning management system, but do not require the user to log into the LMS. The widgets allow users to ...
